The Role of Trans Oral Robotic Surgery in the Carcinoma of Unknown Primary: A New Evidence in the Horizon?
AbstractThe detection of the primary site in Carcinoma of Unknown Primary (CUP) is a challenging task which can significantly alter the course of management and also prognosis. Various modalities have been assessed with varying sensitivity and specificity. Imaging and cytological diagnosis have formed a key part of the diagnostic algorithm of CUP. Trans Oral Robotic Surgery offers the advantage of being both diagnostic as well as therapeutic with promising sensitivity and specificity and can form an integral part in the management of CUP. A prospective study was carried out at a tertiary care centre over a period of one ye...

Impact of the Identification of Nonhuman Genetic Signatures in the Diagnosis and Management of Carcinoma of Unknown Primary
This report presents the case of a 62-year-old woman who was diagnosed in 1999 with stage I cervical carcinoma treated by surgical resection. In 2021, she presented to the emergency department with a complaint of predominantly right-sided lower back pain. A CT scan of the lumbosacral region revealed a bone lesion in the L5 vertebra and retroperitoneal lymphadenopathies suggestive of malignancy. Histology of the L5 vertebra biopsy showed a poorly differentiated carcinoma with an inconclusive immunophenotypic profile. Treatment for carcinoma of unknown primary was started with a combination of carboplatin and paclitaxel ever...

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma initially diagnosed as adenocarcinoma of unknown primary with hepatoduodenal ligament lymph node metastases: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2023 Nov 8;27(1):7. doi: 10.3892/ol.2023.14140. eCollection 2024 Jan.ABSTRACTIntrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) with regional lymph node metastases, which lacks a well-delineated liver mass, may be misdiagnosed as a carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP) origin. The present study reports the case of a 69-year-old man initially diagnosed with CUP, who was incidentally found to have abdominal lymphadenopathy during ultrasonography (US). The clinical course from the time of lymphadenectomy and CUP diagnosis to iCCA detection after long-term follow-up is reported. A patient with a history of hypertensive renal dise...

Merkel cell carcinoma recurrence risk estimation is improved by integrating factors beyond cancer stage: a multivariable model and web-based calculator
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) recurs in 40% of patients. In addition to stage, factors known to affect recurrence risk include: sex, immunosuppression, unknown primary status, age, site of primary tumor, and time since diagnosis. (Source: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology)

Cancer of unknown primary histologically, genetically and spatially diagnosed as left ovary ‑derived cancer: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2023 Oct 19;26(6):522. doi: 10.3892/ol.2023.14109. eCollection 2023 Dec.ABSTRACTCancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a heterogeneous syndrome of metastatic cancer in which the primary site cannot be determined even after a standard and comprehensive search. The present report describes a case in which the spatial distribution of the lymph node metastases contributed to the identification of the primary site. While the standard workup did not identify the primary tumor, genomic profiling analysis was useful in therapeutic management. A 68-year-old woman presented with a cancerous pleural effusion (adenocarcinoma)....
