Peculiarities of autoimmune polyglandular syndromes in children and adolescents.
CONCLUSIONS: 1) Among the different APSs, the one that is most typical of pediatric age is APS-1; 2) APS-1 is not characterized only by the classical triad (chronic moniliasis-hyposurrenalism-hypoparathyroidism) and its clinical spectrum is enlarging over time; 3)APS-2 may have a different epidemiological and clinical expression according to two different nosological classifications. Oral kaposis sarcoma related to aids in late stage
Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is one of the most common neoplasms diagnosed in HIV positive patients. The mortality rate of patients with oral HIV-KS is greater than patients with only cutaneous HIV-KS. On April, 2011, a male patient, 35 years old, MSM HIV+, was admitted at the Service of Oral Medicine with count of CD4+ of 87 cells/cc3, CD8+ of 602 cell/cc3, and viral load of 355 copies/ml. It was found alopecia, malnutrition, brown maculae on forearm and foot (KS). The intraoral examination showed angular fissure (angular cheilitis), atrophy of dorsal tongue papillae, white plaques on the jugal and soft palate (candidosis). (Sourc...

Phagocytosis and nitric oxide production by peritoneal adherent cells in response to Candida albicans in aging: a collaboration to elucidate the pathogenesis of denture stomatitis
Conclusions PAC from aged mice may capture and store many fungi, which in turn may mean that these cells are effectively unable to eliminate fungi, probably due to impaired NO production. Therefore, considering the important role of C. albicans overgrowth in the pathogenesis of DS and the aspects observed in this study, aging may favor the onset and severity of local candidosis such as DS and its systemic forms. Preclinical study of a cost-effective photodynamic therapy protocol for treating oral candidoses
This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a PDT method based on light curing units ’ blue LEDs combined to a plaque-disclosing composition (5% erythrosine) againstC. albicans in culture and in a murine model of oral candidosis. Standard and resistant fungal strains were tested in vitro in planktonic and biofilm forms. PDT (pre-irradiation time periods: 30 and 60  s; irradiation time: 3 min) was compared to control conditions without light and/or erythrosine. Mice with induced oral candidosis (n = 40) randomly received PDT or similar control conditions with subsequentC. albicans count. These mice underwent histolo...

Non ‐response to fluconazole maintenance treatment (ReCiDiF regimen) for recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis is not related to impaired glucose metabolism
Summary Is non‐response to maintenance treatment for recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis (RCVV) related to the impaired glucose metabolism? In the ReCiDiF trial, women with RCVV were given a degressive regimen with fluconazole according to their clinical, microscopic and mycologic response. Data obtained from optimal, suboptimal and non‐reponding patients were used for secondary analysis of medical history, physical status and family history for potential glucose impairment. Results were presented in means and percentages. Pearson chi‐square, Fisher exact, Mann‐Whitney U, Kruskal‐Wallis and Spearman's correlation c...

The colonization with Candida species is more harmful in the second trimester of pregnancy
ConclusionWomen who are colonized withCandida spp. during the second trimester of pregnancy have higher rates of preterm birth and lower neonatal birthweight than those who are colonized during the first trimester of their pregnancy. Screening programs for asymptomaticCandida colonization should take this information into account. (Source: Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics)

Antifungal peptides: a potential new class of antifungals for treating vulvovaginal candidiasis caused by fluconazole ‐resistant Candida albicans
Vulvovaginal candidiasis/candidosis is a common fungal infection afflicting approximately 75% of women globally caused primarily by the yeast Candida albicans. Fluconazole is widely regarded as the antifungal drug of choice since its introduction in 1990 due to its high oral bioavailability, convenient dosing regimen and favourable safety profile. However, its widespread use has led to the emergence of fluconazole‐resistant C. albicans, posing a universal clinical concern. Coupled to the dearth of new antifungal drugs entering the market, it is imperative to introduce new drug classes to counter this threat. Antimicrobia...

Prevalence of Candida spp. in Healthy Oral Mucosa Surfaces with Higher Incidence of Chronic Hyperplastic Candidosis.
CONCLUSION: While direct examination is effective for detecting pseudohyphae, LVDO and tobacco smoking seem to be factors of relevance to the development of CHC. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Since CHC has been linked to a high rate of malignant transformation, this study analyzes some clinical (and exogenous) factors that may contribute to the development of CHC and addresses some preventive measures to reduce its incidence. Prevalence and distribution of oral mucosal non-malignant lesions in the western Sicilian population.
CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence necessitates adequate awareness of these lesions in the general population. The dental clinicians should also be knowledgeable about the etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of these lesions. Can Routine Histopathology Distinguish Between Vulvar Cutaneous Candidosis and Dermatophytosis?
Conclusions: Vulvar cutaneous candidosis and dermatophytosis cannot be reliably distinguished by routine histopathology or specific polymerase chain reaction. A high index of suspicion combined with adequate microbiological testing remains the best approach to differentiating between the 2, which impacts on counseling, treatment, and prognosis. Clinical Significance and Characteristic Clinical Differences of Cytolytic Vaginosis in Recurrent Vulvovaginitis
Conclusions: CV is clinically important, because it is a common cause of recurrent vulvovaginitis. To distinguish CV from VVC, gynecologists should consider the patient's medical history, physical and laboratory findings, vaginal pH and vaginal discharge characteristics.Gynecol Obstet Invest (Source: Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation)

Etiologic Agents and Antifungal Susceptibility of Oral Candidosis from Romanian patients with HIV-infection or type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Authors: Minea B, Nastasa V, Kolecka A, Mares M, Marangoci N, Rosca I, Pinteala M, Hancianu M, Mares M Abstract This is the first Romanian investigation of oral candidosis in patients suffering of HIV-infection or type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Candida albicans was the dominant species in both types of isolates: n = 14 (46.7%) in T1DM, n = 60 (69.8%) in HIV. The most frequent non-albicans Candida spp. were Candida kefyr (n = 6; 20%) in T1DM and Candida dubliniensis (n = 8; 9.3%) in HIV. Resistance to fluconazole was detected only in the HIV non-albicans Candida group (n = 8; 9.3%). All isolates were susc...

Perception of iron deficiency from oral mucosa alterations that show a high prevalence of Candida infection
Conclusion The study demonstrates that oral mucosa alterations accompanying oral candidosis are a sensitive indicator of ID. All oral changes can be successfully ameliorated by iron therapy plus antifungals when candidosis exists. Investigating the origin of IDA is necessary, because it may be the first sign of a more serious disease, particularly malignancy. (Source: Journal of the Formosan Medical Association)
