Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental hygiene students in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.

Influence of Sars-Cov 2 lockdown on the incidence of facial trauma in a tertiary care hospital in Rome, Italy.
CONCLUSIONS: During the 2 months of COVID-19-related lockdown, a dramatic decrease in facial trauma patients was observed at our tertiary care hospital with a shift toward older age ranges. Regarding the causes of trauma, the largest percentage reduction was found in road, sports and work accidents; this percentage reduction was not found in aggressions. A small increase in the percentage was also found regarding surgical indications, likely because more severe cases were more prone to be referred to the hospital despite the fear of being infected. Reduce the spread of COVID-19 within the dental practice: the era of single use.
CONCLUSIONS: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a coronavirus type transmitted through droplets produced by infected people when they cough, sneeze or exhale. Our proposal in dictating the sequence and types of protective devices to be worn by patients minimizes the contagion between patients in a professional healthcare office and is applicable for any type of infectious emergency. Comparison between four different implant surface debridement methods: an in-vitro experimental study.
Authors: Mensi M, Viviani L, Agosti R, Scotti E, Garzetti G, Calza S Abstract BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis treatment is a very challenging topic to discuss. What is certain is that preventive/supportive therapy plays a key-role in peri-implant tissues' health maintenance and non-surgical implant surface mechanical debridement remains one of the solid pillars in the therapeutic pathway. In this perspective, many surface decontaminating methods have been proposed and tested to remove hard and soft bacterial deposits. The aim of this study was to compare four different commonly used non-surgical implant debridement me...

Maxillary dento-skeletal outcomes after orthopedic forward (class III) and backward (class II) traction in growing subjects.
CONCLUSIONS: Facemask induced greater skeletal movements than extraoral traction on Stephenson plate. Evaluation of the epithelial cells of lower lip mucosa after debonding of fixed orthodontic appliances.
Authors: Rafighi A, Sohrabi A, Zokaee M, Moghaddam SF, Sharghi R Abstract BACKGROUND: Orthodontic appliances (ligatures, braces, wires, etc.), are one of the main sources of trauma in the oral cavity. Friction between brackets and mucosa is a kind of chronic trauma that may cause buccal mucosal proliferation and ulceration and is one of the most common complaints of patients during orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of the lower lip epithelial cells after the removal of orthodontic fixed appliances. METHODS: Cells of lower lip oral mucosa of 31 orthodontic patients were col...

Recognition of lysyl oxidase as a potential predictive biomarker for oral squamous cell carcinoma: an immunohistochemical study.
CONCLUSIONS: LOX has a 'pro-neoplastic' effect as it modulates the host stroma to favour increasing tumour mass and worsening prognosis. Increased expression of LOX causes increased collagen fibre cross-linkage that 'stiffens' the stromal matrix. This increases compressive stresses contributing to tissue hypoxia that elevates Rho GTPase-dependent cytoskeletal tension leading to erratic tumour cell morphogenesis that in turn confers motility to these cells resulting in metastasis. Inhibitors of LOX can potentially down-regulate LOX levels in the tumour micro-environment by controlling tissue hypoxia and curtailing the produ...
