Bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw: systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: The treatment of BRONJ is still under debate and there are promising treatments that need randomized trials with larger numbers of patients to confirm their results. Patients receiving BPs or those who will start treatment should be encouraged to perform preventive dental treatment and maintain good oral hygiene. Maxillary dento-skeletal outcomes after orthopedic forward (class III) and backward (class II) traction in growing subjects.
CONCLUSIONS: Facemask induced greater skeletal movements than extraoral traction on Stephenson plate. PS produced a limited downward movement of the whole maxilla together with notable incisors and molars back corrections. Based on our results, it could be speculated that orthopedic mesial traction of maxillary bone may result easier than the distal movement. Psychological reactions to COVID-19 and epidemiological aspects of dental practitioners during lockdown in Italy.
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19-related emergency condition had a highly negative impact on dental practices in Italy. Evaluation of the epithelial cells of lower lip mucosa after debonding of fixed orthodontic appliances.
Authors: Rafighi A, Sohrabi A, Zokaee M, Moghaddam SF, Sharghi R Abstract BACKGROUND: Orthodontic appliances (ligatures, braces, wires, etc.), are one of the main sources of trauma in the oral cavity. Friction between brackets and mucosa is a kind of chronic trauma that may cause buccal mucosal proliferation and ulceration and is one of the most common complaints of patients during orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of the lower lip epithelial cells after the removal of orthodontic fixed appliances. METHODS: Cells of lower lip oral mucosa of 31 orthodontic patients were col...

The patient-doctor relationship: new insights in light of the current Ministerial recommendations regarding Phase 2 of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Authors: Campisi G, Bazzano M, Mauceri R, Panzarella V, Di Fede O, Bizzoca ME, Lo Muzio L Abstract Following the publication of the Italian Ministerial recommendations relating to dentistry in Phase 2 of the COVID-19 pandemic (focusing on operational protocols for all dental staff), we believe that the patient/dentist relationship should increasingly take into account the heightened fears and anxious thoughts of patients. This particularly regards patients who are about to undergo dental work. Moreover, dentists should also pay close attention to recent events, which have determined the new recommendations regardin...

Negative social comparisons and social discomfort in dentofacial deformity: a cross-sectional study.
Authors: Silva M, Francisco I, Sanz D, Palmeira L, Vale F Abstract BACKGROUND: Patients with severe dentofacial deformities are more susceptible to psychological distress since they are more likely to be emotionally unstable, less sociable and have higher levels of anxiety and neuroticism. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between dentofacial deformity, negative social comparisons, anxiety and discomfort in social situations due to face appearance in two independent samples. METHODS: The sample consisted of 136 patients (Group A- 90 college students; Group B- 46 patients with dentofacial dysmo...

Recognition of lysyl oxidase as a potential predictive biomarker for oral squamous cell carcinoma: an immunohistochemical study.
CONCLUSIONS: LOX has a 'pro-neoplastic' effect as it modulates the host stroma to favour increasing tumour mass and worsening prognosis. Increased expression of LOX causes increased collagen fibre cross-linkage that 'stiffens' the stromal matrix. This increases compressive stresses contributing to tissue hypoxia that elevates Rho GTPase-dependent cytoskeletal tension leading to erratic tumour cell morphogenesis that in turn confers motility to these cells resulting in metastasis. Inhibitors of LOX can potentially down-regulate LOX levels in the tumour micro-environment by controlling tissue hypoxia and curtailing the produ...

Reosseointegration after the surgical treatment of induced peri-implantitis: systematic review on current evidence and translation from the animal to the human model.
CONCLUSIONS: Animal studies of induced peri-implantitis seem to indicate that rough surfaces can enhance reosseointegration as compared to smooth surfaces. With regard to bone regeneration techniques and materials, submerged healing and barrier membranes have shown a positive effect on reosseointegration. No evidence exists, however, about the specific role of different bone substitutes and their ability to improve bone formation.
