Winning awards and gaining recognition: An impact analysis of APSA section book prizes
This study has two objectives: to rank order the top ten publishers of all 609 “best book” awards by APSA sections from 1985 to 2016 and to show using multiple regression analysis which variables best explain why some award-winning volumes receive more scholarly citations than other books. Our dependent variable is average yearly citation counts from copyright date to 2017, and five independent variables were tested in the analysis: (1) prestige ranking of the publisher; (2) number of authors; (3) size of APSA section; (4) subfield specialization; and (5) gender (male or female authors). Cross-cultural research on spatial concept development.
Abstract
I will first review cross-cultural research in the area of culture and cognition, with particular focus on the development of spatial concepts. I propose that the formulation best covering all empirical data is in terms of «cognitive style», i.e., spatial cognitive processes are universally available to all humans, but there are preferences for some spatial frames of reference over others. Infant Temperament: Repercussions of Superstorm Sandy-Related Maternal Stress.
This study recruited a prospective cohort of 380 pregnant women before, during, or after Superstorm Sandy in 2012 to examine the association between disaster-related pre- and post-natal maternal stress and offspring temperament at 6 months-old. Mothers prospectively reported stressful experiences during the storm and rated their child's temperament 6 months postpartum. Results indicated that length of time without phone or electricity and financial loss was associated with offspring negative affect, whereas financial loss and threat of death or injury was associated with emotion dysregulation. The Importance of Understanding the Technology that Serves Us
In 1914, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Max von Laue for his discovery of X-ray diffraction patterns created by the periodicity of crystalline structures. The following year, the prize was awarded to William Henry Bragg and his son William Lawrence Bragg for their description of the laws that could be applied to X-ray crystallography to define molecular structures. Amazingly, William Lawrence performed this work as a first-year research student at Cambridge University and was the youngest Nobel laureate in physics at 25 years of age (please, nobody tell my mother).
