European Glaucoma Society - A guide on surgical innovation for glaucoma
Br J Ophthalmol. 2023 Dec 21;107(Suppl 1):1-114. doi: 10.1136/bjophthalmol-2023-egsguidelines.ABSTRACTPROLOGUE: Glaucoma surgery has been, for many decades now, dominated by the universal gold standard which is trabeculectomy augmented with antimetabolites. Tubes also came into the scene to complement what we use to call conventional or traditional glaucoma surgery. More recently we experienced a changing glaucoma surgery environment with the "advent" of what we have become used to calling Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). What is the unmet need, what is the gap that these newcomers aim to fill? Hippocrates taugh...

1 Can we prevent dementia?
Dr Mukadam completed her Medical Sciences undergraduate degree at Cambridge University with an intercalated BA in Experimental Psychology. She then studied Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford and trained in general medicine and surgery at Oxford and Newcastle. She completed her psychiatric training on the Royal Free Psychiatric Training rotation and obtained her CCT in Old Age Psychiatry in 2013. Dr Mukadam obtained a doctoral research training fellowship from the NIHR to design and test an intervention to encourage South Asian people to seek help earlier for dementia. During her PhD, Dr Mukadam has collaborated ...

Retrospective risk factor analysis for re-expansion pulmonary oedema after therapeutic pleural effusion drainage at a single centre
Conclusion: Despite therapeutic pleural effusion drainage at Cambridge University Hospital being guided solely by symptom onset, clinical RPO is a very rare complication with 0.5% incidence and no associated mortality. We did not detect a relationship between volume drained and clinical RPO, so our practice remains safe. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Anthony Fauci on becoming the ‘devil’ and a warning for his successor
Last Wednesday afternoon, Anthony Fauci, one of the world’s most famous scientists, answered the door of his Washington, D.C., house in jeans and a T-shirt, apologizing for the boxes in his living room. Although he retired in December 2022 from directing the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), he has just recently finished deciding what should go to archives at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and what to keep from the abundant memorabilia he had collected from his 38 years in that job . An immunologist by training, Fauci spent much of his career overseeing the world’s ...

‘Transformative’ journals get booted for switching to open access too slowly
Two-thirds of the more than 2300 scientific journals participating in a program designed to flip them to open access (OA) failed to meet prescribed targets for progress in 2022. As a result, the Coalition S group of research funders behind the initiative announced today that it will remove these journals from the program at the end of the year. The funders will no longer pay the fees these journals charge authors for OA publication, although scholars may still publish OA articles in these titles if they pay using other funding sources. Although most publishers say they support a transition to OA from the existing sub...
