Effects of molybdenum supply on microbial diversity and mineral nutrient availability in the rhizosphere soil of broad bean (Vicia Faba L.)
In this study, we collected rhizosphere soil samples from different growth stages of broad beans. By analyzing mineral element contents, soil phosphorus and zinc fractions, as well as fungal and bacterial diversity, we observed that Mo application resulted in a reduction of soil Citrate‒P and HCl‒P content. This reduction led to an increase in available P content at different stages. Moreover, Mo application elevated root P concentration, but concurrently impeded the translocation of P to the shoots. Mo application also decreased the soil Exc‒Zn (exchangeable Zn) content while increasing the Res‒Zn (residual Zn) co...

Metabolomic Analysis and In Vitro Investigation of the Biological Properties of a By-Product Derived from Vicia faba
Chem Biodivers. 2023 Oct 25:e202301095. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301095. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBy-products from plant sources are recently regarded as a valuable source of bioactive compounds. In this regard, the present study aims to assess the bioactivities of the 70% MeOH extract obtained from Vicia faba peels and analyze its metabolomic profile. Acetylcholinesterase and carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes inhibitory activities of the plant extract were assayed using quantitative colorimetric tests. Antioxidant activity was estimated by DPPH assay, and cytotoxic activity was evaluated against normal fibroblast skin ce...

Enhancing Vicia faba ’s immunity against Rhizoctonia solani root rot diseases by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and nano chitosan
The spreading of root rot disease of faba bean plant (Vichia faba L, VF) in Egypt is still of great challenge faced researchers since VF is an important legume in Egypt, because their seeds are used for human fee... (Source: BMC Plant Biology)

Characterization of drought stress-mitigating Rhizobium from faba bean (Vicia faba L.) in the Chinese Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
Rhizobium-driven symbiotic nitrogen-fixation in legumes not only benefits the growth but also enhances the stress tolerance of plants. Isolating and characterizing efficient, drought-tolerant rhizobia is a central goal for improving crop yields in arid regions. Here, we phylogenetically and biochemically characterized a novel strain of Rhizobium (‘QHCD11’) sampled from the root nodules of faba beans growing in an arid agricultural area in Qinghai-Tibet. We further tested the drought tolerance of the strain as well as of ‘Qingcan 14’ faba bean seedlings inoculated with it. Biochemical characterization involved bromo...

Growth stimulation of two legumes (Vicia faba and Pisum sativum) using phosphate-solubilizing bacteria inoculation
This study aims to evaluate the impact of five strains of PSB, isolated from legume rhizosphere, on the growth of two plants (Vicia faba and Pisum sativum) and certain soil properties. The efficient strains of PSB used are characterized by the P-solubilization, the ACC deaminase activity, the fixation of N, and the IAA, HCN, and siderophores production. The activity of these bacteria is tested in vitro and in vivo under controlled conditions on the growth of the two plants supplemented with the rock P (RP). According to our findings, all PSBs strains outperformed the control in terms of enhancing the growth of the tested l...

Turnip yellows virus variants differ in host range, transmissibility, and virulence
This study was designed to test the hypothesis that three TuYV isolates, representing each of the Australian P5 variants, differ phenotypically. In particular, the host range, vector species, transmissibility, and virulence of isolates 5414 (P5-I5414), 5509 (P5-II5509), and 5594 (P5-III5594) were examined in a series of glasshouse experiments. Only P5-I5414 readily infected faba bean (Vicia faba), only P5-II5509 infected chickpea (Cicer arietinum), and only P5-I5414 and P5-III5594 infected lettuce (Lactuca sativa).Myzus persicae transmitted each isolate, butBrevicoryne brassicae andLipaphis pseudobrassicae did not. When us...
