Uptake, accumulation and elimination of cadmium in a soil - Faba bean (Vicia faba) - Aphid (Aphis fabae) - Ladybird (Coccinella transversalis) food chain
Chemosphere. 2021 Apr 8;279:130522. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2021.130522. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCadmium is a highly mobile toxic heavy metal and a serious hazard to the biosphere. We studied uptake, accumulation and elimination of cadmium in a soil - faba bean - aphid - ladybird food chain. The soil in the study was amended with Cd at concentrations 0, 5, 10, 20 and, 30 mg kg-1 (w/w). We noted significant Cd transfer in a dose-dependent manner. Cadmium biomagnified in faba bean roots and aphids while biominimized in ladybirds as revealed by their respective transfer coefficients. The concentration-dependent remov...

In-vitro compatibility assay of indigenous Trichoderma and Pseudomonas species and their antagonistic activities against black root rot disease (Fusarium solani) of faba bean (Vicia faba L.)
Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivation is highly challenged by faba bean black root rot disease (Fusarium solani) in high lands of Ethiopia. To ensure sustainable production of faba beans, searching for eco-friend... (Source: BMC Microbiology)

Effects of heat-moisture treatment conditions on the physicochemical properties and digestibility of field bean starch (Vicia faba var. minor)
Int J Biol Macromol. 2021 Apr 6:S0141-8130(21)00769-8. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2021.04.015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the presented study, starch of two cultivars of field bean was modified via the heat-moisture treatment (HMT) at various moisture contents (15 and 30%) and temperatures (100 and 120 °C) to determine HMT effect on its physicochemical properties and digestibility. Non-modified (NM) starches showed only slight variation in properties, with the tested varieties differing only in slowly digestible starch (SDS) and resistant starch (RS) content. The HMT was shown to decrease the swelling power and amylose...

Developing a new genic SSR primer database in faba bean (Vicia faba L.)
J Appl Genet. 2021 Mar 23. doi: 10.1007/s13353-021-00626-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe goal of this research was to develop a new genetic database of simple sequence repetition (SSR) primers for faba and classify them according to their target genes and respective biological processes. Approximately 75,605 and 148,196 previously published genomic and transcriptomic faba sequences, respectively, have been used to detect possible SSRs. The numbers of identified SSRs from each dataset were 25,502 and 12,319, respectively. The distribution of different repeat classes indicated that trinucleotides represent the largest n...

G6PD Variants and Haemolytic Sensitivity to Primaquine and Other Drugs
Restrictions on the cultivation and ingestion of fava beans were first reported as early as the fifth century BC. Not until the late 19th century were clinical descriptions of fava-induced disease reported and soon after characterised as “favism” in the early 20th century. It is now well known that favism as well as drug-induced haemolysis is caused by a deficiency of the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme, one of the most common enzyme deficiency in humans. Interest about the interaction between G6PD deficiency and therapeutics has increased recently because mass treatment with oxidative 8-aminoquinolines...

Accumulation and Transfer of Cadmium Isotope (112Cd) by Sonchus asper Intercropped with Vicia faba and Implications for Phytoremediation.
In this study, Sonchus asper and Vicia faba were planted side by side in soils amended with arbuscular mycorrhizae, and 112Cd was applied to either Sonchus asper or Vicia faba planted soils while the neighboring plant received 112Cd across a nylon net impermeable to the roots. Mean concentration of 112Cd in the shoot of Sonchus asper was 7.0 times higher than Vicia faba. The translocation factor of 112Cd in Sonchus asper were 39 and 400 times higher than in Vicia faba under the 112Cd direct and indirect treatments, respectively. The results suggested that the intercropping of Sonchus asper as a hyperaccumulator with Vicia ...

Methanolic extracts of a selected Egyptian Vicia faba cultivar mitigate the oxidative/inflammatory burden and afford neuroprotection in a mouse model of Parkinson ’s disease
AbstractVicia faba L. is a legume from the family Fabaceae. Ancient Egyptians consumed fava beans thousands of years ago and they are still one of the most popular foods in Egypt. The current study examined the anti-Parkinson effect of 80% methanolic extracts of seeds or sprouts of the fava ‘Sakha 3 ‘cultivar which has been selected based on the total phenol content among three cultivars tested. In addition, the extracts were characterized by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection and quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (RP- HPLC–DAD-QTOF-MS). Three doses (200...
