Molybdenum and hydrogen sulfide synergistically mitigate arsenic toxicity by modulating defense system, nitrogen and cysteine assimilation in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) seedlings
Environ Pollut. 2021 Aug 12;290:117953. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2021.117953. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydrogen sulfide (H2S) has emerged as a potential gasotransmitter in plants with a beneficial role in stress amelioration. Despite the various known functions of H2S in plants, not much information is available to explain the associative role of molybdenum (Mo) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) signaling in plants under arsenic toxicity. In view to address such lacunae in our understanding of the integrative roles of these biomolecules, the present work attempts to decipher the roles of Mo and H2S in mitigation of arsenate (As...

Tissue culture-based genetic improvement of fava bean (Vicia faba L.): analysis on previous achievements and future perspectives
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2021 Aug 24. doi: 10.1007/s00253-021-11517-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFava bean is an extremely important legume and serves immense potential to function as an ingredient as pulse proteins in human diet. Bearing the proficiency of yielding magnanimous amount of functional and nutritional ingredients, this bean deserves to replace any other leguminous crop too. The instability of fava bean in its yield makes breeding for crop improvement difficult, and its high susceptibility to a number of abiotic and biotic stresses additionally results in unstable yields. The self-incompatibility leads to...

Vitamin E ameliorates disturbances in testosterone pathway and sperm quality of male rats induced by the glycosides vicine and convicine of
Khaled M.M. Koriem, Mahmoud S.S. Arbid Nutrition & Food Science, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- This paper aims to design to evaluate the protective effect of vitamin E to ameliorate the disturbances in testosterone pathway and sperm quality of male rats induced by the glycosides vicine (V) and convicine (C) of Vicia faba. Forty male albino rats were divided into five equal groups; control, paraffin oil, V (400 mg/kg) C (150 mg/kg)-treated group, vitamin E (100 mg/kg) + VC-treated group, and vitamin E (200 mg/kg) + VC-treated groups which injected intraperioneal...

Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity evaluation of polystyrene microplastics on Vicia faba roots
In this study, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on V. faba roots were investigated by exposing Vicia faba roots to PS-MPs (10 nm) for 24, 48, and 72 h. The viability, micronucleus rate, and reactive oxygen species metabolism of V. faba root border cells were then analyzed in detail, and a transcriptome sequencing analysis was performed. The results demonstrate that PS-MP treatment could significantly increase the percentage of late apoptotic cells and dead cells, which suggests that PS-MPs can lead the apoptosis or thanatosis of root margin cells. Moreover, the micronucleus rate in ro...
