Effectiveness of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on all-cause pneumonia in children under 5  years in Shanghai, China: An observational study
CONCLUSIONS: PCV13 vaccination among children aged 0-5 years substantially reduced the incidence of all-cause pneumonia. Direct immunization of children under 5 years is an effective strategy to combat outpatient pneumonia, and hospitalized pneumonia.PMID:37620204 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.041 (Source: Vaccine)

MRSA Nasal PCR ’ s Role in Empiric Antibiotic Selection
Case A 67-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was admitted to inpatient general medicine from his nursing home for pneumonia. He reported a 10-day history of an upper respiratory viral infection with symptoms improving until two days ago. Initial evaluation revealed a temperature of 100.5° F, heart rate of 95 beats per minute, blood pressure of 147/89 mmHg, respiratory rate of 25 per minute, and O2 saturation of 92% on room air. His white blood cell count was 14,000. Both a COVID-19 and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay were negative. ...

Radiological assessment of immunotherapy effects and immune checkpoint-related pneumonitis for lung cancer
This article reviews the complications of immunotherapy in lung cancer and illustrates various radiologic patterns of ICI-pneumonitis. Additionally, it is tried to differentiate ICI-pneumonitis from other pulmonary pathologies common to lung cancer such as radiation pneumonitis, bacterial pneumonia and coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) infection in recent months. Maybe it is challenging to distinguish radiologically but clinical presentation may help.PMID:37525480 | DOI:10.1111/jcmm.17895 (Source: J Cell Mol Med)

AMPK activation improves recovery from pneumonia-induced lung injury via reduction of er-stress and apoptosis in alveolar epithelial cells
CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides important insights into AMPK function in the preservation of AEC viability after bacterial infection, in particular due reduction of ER-stress and apoptosis, thereby promoting effective recovery from lung injury after pneumonia.PMID:37438806 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-023-02483-6 (Source: Cell Research)

AMPK activation improves recovery from pneumonia-induced lung injury via reduction of er-stress and apoptosis in alveolar epithelial cells
Bacterial pneumonia and related lung injury are among the most frequent causes of mortality in intensive care units, but also inflict serious and prolonged respiratory complications among survivors. Given that... (Source: Respiratory Research)

Mitochondria of lung venular capillaries mediate lung-liver crosstalk in pneumonia
Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol. 2023 Jul 11. doi: 10.1152/ajplung.00209.2022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFailure of the lung's endothelial barrier underlies lung injury, which causes the high mortality Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Multiple organ failure predisposes to the mortality, but mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we show that mitochondrial Uncoupling Protein 2 (UCP2), a component of the mitochondrial inner membrane, plays a role in the barrier failure. Subsequent lung-liver crosstalk mediated by neutrophil activation causes liver congestion. We intranasally instilled lipopolysaccharide (L...
