Water Fasting Summary
I completed my water fast yesterday. I fasted for 17 days and 3 hours, which is longer than I’ve ever fasted before. These toxins include pesticides, herbicides, pollution, heavy metals, plastics, animal hormones, pharmaceuticals, radiation, and more. We’re exposed to such toxins merely by drinking water, br...

5 Common Mistakes (and Solutions) When Dealing with Kids ’ Chronic Constipation
As a pediatric feeding specialist, my job includes helping kids become more adventurous eaters by working with registered dietitians, physicians and other team members to ensure a child learns to comfortably try new foods. One frequent issue in kids with feeding challenges is chronic constipation. Why? Because picky or selective eaters often food jag on fiberless “kid food” like chicken nuggets and mac-n-cheese. Kids—especially picky eaters—need to have regular, almost daily bowel movements in order to feel hungry and increase their desire to try a variety of foods. Steve Hodges, a pediatric urologist at Wake Fores...

We Don ’ t Always Have to Say We ’ re Fine — and That ’ s Fine

Neither would her mouth, hanging open with each long, slow, laborious breath. I guess if you weren’t me, this picture c...

3 Ways to Play in Food Without the Mess
Speech-language pathologists often recommend kids explore food by getting messy—sinking hands deep into yogurt, painting with pudding or squishing avocados to make “hand-made” guacamole. For kids hesitant to engage in messy play, however, or parents who can’t embrace it every day, try these three tips for encouraging kids to explore food. It’s often the first step to learning to eat new foods: Mosaic pepper pictures: Bell peppers are one food hesitant eaters might resist touching. Their tactile system might recoil at the slightly wet interior of the pepper. Cut peppers into strips and remove any excess seeds, th...

5 Myths and Truths About Choking
As a pediatric feeding therapist, I often encounter parents with misconceived notions about choking, especially when their children are between 6 months and 4 years old and just learning to eat a variety of solid foods. Below, I list five common myths SLPs can dispel, along with five truths we can share to raise awareness and keep “learning eaters” safe. Myths: Coughing while eating signals choking. Typically, occasional coughing while eating means the child experienced difficulty coordinating the swallowing mechanism, and is attempting to expel any residue from the airway and surrounding area. In order to cough, air...

Are super foods good for your skin? Episode 137
Are super foods effective beauty ingredients? Jana asks…What are your thoughts on super foods in skin care? Ingredients like acacia, coconut, grapeseed oil, berries, green tea, avocado, turmeric and resveratrol. What the heck IS a super food? There is no scientific or medical definition.
