How is it that I’ve never heard of David Avocado Wolfe before?
I’ve been at this skeptical blogging thing for over a decade now. I realize that I periodically remind you, my readers, of this and that perhaps I do it too often, but my reminders generally serve a purpose. Specifically, they serve to put an exclamation point on my surprise when I discover a new purveyor… (Source: Respectful Insolence)

Is my conditioner covering my hair in plastic?
Havoctheory says…I heard that conditioners contain ingredients such as polymers with reflective qualities to coat hair strands. They reflect light and therefore makes your hair shiny. Is this true? What kind of chemicals would also produce this effect? The Beauty Brains respond This question comes from our Forum where Pufff added this comment: “Hey! I actually was just thinking about this the other day! I was reading the ingredients on some of the old gel I have and saw it used a polymer which surprised me cause isn’t that plastic??? The gel did make my hair look shiny soooo who knows.” Polymer does not equal “...

Simple Tips & Tweaks for Creating a Productive To-Do List
I love lists. And I make many of them. I make lists of my daily tasks. I make lists of the articles I need to write each month — both in a Word doc and in a separate notebook. I make lists in most of my blog posts. I make lists for different projects. I make lists for the grocery store. I make lists of the bills I need to pay and write down when I’ve paid them. I make lists of books I’d like to read. I probably make lots of other lists that simply aren’t coming to mind right now. With my penchant for listmaking, it seems I’ve found a kindred spirit in Paula Rizzo, the founder of ListProducer.com and author of...

Viroids, infectious agents that encode no proteins
Genomes of non-defective viruses range in size from 2,400,000 bp of dsDNA (Pandoravirus salinus) to 1,759 bp of ssDNA (porcine circovirus). Are even smaller viral genomes possible? The subviral agents called viroids provide an answer to this question. Viroids, the smallest known pathogens, are naked, circular, single-stranded RNA molecules that do not encode protein yet replicate autonomously when introduced into host plants. Potato spindle tuber viroid, discovered in 1971, is the prototype; 29 other viroids have since been discovered ranging in length from 120 to 475 nucleotides. Viroids only infect plants; some cause ec...

First of all, those of you familiar with the Wheat Belly message understand: Wheat Belly is NOT about being gluten-free! Despite the popularity of the Wheat Belly message, I still have to remind critics and people in media of this fact. Nonetheless, let’s go through the arguments that Consumers Reports makes and show why they drip thickly with misinformation, one by one: 1. Gluten-free isn’t more nutritious ...

Take a Vacation but Not from Health
Welcome to the dog days of summer. Lots of Americans are headed off to the beach. Some are headed to a State Fair. In my town of Philadelphia, we say they are going ‘down the shore.’ When they get there what will they find to eat? Here’s what the various fairs and boardwalks are advertising:   Chocolate covered bacon strips, suggested as best served in a pancake folded like a taco, with a few fresh strawberries (let’s hear it for the fruit!). Mojito cookies: butter cookies with rum. Risotto bombs: deep-fried ball of Arborio rice, breaded and with mozzarella filling. Fried pickles: deep-fried, breaded an...

Low Carb, Paleo Sushi- and No, I'm not kidding.
When one makes the decision to embrace a grain free diet, one often fails to consider that one of the carby delights in life, sushi, will no longer be a regular staple of the diet. I like sushi, but I am not a purist, I'm a roll kind of gal. Which in some sets, is the trash of sushi. I like things with rice, tempura-ed shellfish, cream cheese, things with the word 'rainbow' in the name, avocado, things with the word 'California' in the name. I think you get the gist. So while I could have proper sushi, nigiri, on a paleo diet, I have ZERO interest in eating raw fish by itself. I love the soy sauce, the wasabi tha...
