Am I too skinny?
LM posted this interesting dilemma: I wonder if anyone has experienced TOO MUCH weight loss with the wheat free diet? I have been eliminating obvious sources of wheat for roughly 4 months and have been steadily losing weight. By obvious, I mean that I don’t go out of my way to avoid things that contain trace amounts of wheat, soy sauce, or other sauces thickened with flour. I also don’t totally avoid beer, though I tend not to drink a lot of it. I have tested negative for celiac disease and don’t believe that I have a noticeable sensitivity to wheat. In the first month or so, I started noticing a change of shape in ...

Will you survive Wheat Belly?
Dietitian Kristi King reviewed Wheat Belly for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), full text here. Among her comments: ” . . . there is very little guidance as to what are appropriate substitutions during meals, therefore, one who does not review this diet with a registered dietitian could potentially set themselves up for vitamin and mineral deficiencies, such as B vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D just to name a few.” “Review this diet with a registered dietitian”? Is she serious? This is indeed consistent with the agenda that the Academy has been pursuing for many years, trying to make ...

Personalized Nutrition – Making Food Choices that Work for You
As March marches on, I’m still finding ways to celebrate National Nutrition Month’s theme of “Eat Right, Your Way”. I was on WBAL (watch the full WBAL clip here) and Let’s Talk Live DC recently and shared some ideas to make eating healthier work for you. It’s all about personalized nutrition. My view: Not everything has to be absolutely perfect all of the time. I wrote about that in my blog for US News Health. Instead of thinking “all or nothing,” make choices that work for you and help you enjoy your meals. We know that eating wholesome foods delivers nutrients. The “My Plate&...

Are these silk baby sunscreen wipes the safest bet for my child?
Concerned Mom has a question…I am afraid because I hear how dangerous sunblock is but Baby Silk Babysafe Sunscreen Towelettes says it’s natural and made of silk would this be a good substitute? The Beauty Brains respond:  While you certainly want to be careful about what you put on your baby’s skin, the dangers of sunscreen are over-exaggerated. And speaking of exaggeration, let’s take a look at this product. Is silk a good sunscreen? Even though the product is called a “Baby Silk Sunscreen” it actually contains the physical sunblocking agents Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. That...

The Alzheimer's Diet! Interview & Giveaway & Mini-Review
Good luck clicking.  Image swiped from Amazon 'cause I forgot (!) to ask for one. Alzheimer's is one of those tragic diseases many of us don't like to think about, despite how common it is.  I know very few people whose lives haven't been touched by it in some way. And no lifestyle intervention can guarantee a healthy brain in old age. Let's hope for a cure, pronto. Hurry Up, 'K? Thanks! But in the meantime, there is a lot that clever scientists have discovered about stuff that you can do to make contracting Alzheimer's less likely. Is it worth making a few changes now, perhaps decades ahead of ...

Chef Pete Evans goes wheat-free!
Australian chef and TV personality, Pete Evans, asked me to write a section for his new cookbook: Over the last 12 months we have been working on a new cookbook, which will be available in about a years time [February 2014]. Dr William Davis, a preventative cardiologist who wrote “WHEAT BELLY” (a must read book) has kindly shared his research for our new book, along with a host of other highly respected health and wellness pioneers and experts. And for the record the only flour we use at home is coconut and almond flours. Pete tells me that, in the new cookbook, “there will be no recipes featuring wheat&...

Does the Oil in Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Shampoo Do Anything?
Miss Monet must know…I was looking for a good conditioning and found Garnier Triple Nutrition shampoo. Why is oil is put in shampoo when its going  to go down the drain because sulfates get rid of dirt and oil? The Beauty Brains respond: Garnier’s Fructis line (made my L’Oreal) was originally based on fruit acids. Over time they’ve expanded their product line to include new products like this Triple Nutrition shampoo. According to their website it’s based on “Fortified Fruit Science”  which consists of “3 Nutritive Fruit Weightless Oils” Olive, Avocado and Shea. Nut...

5 Foods That Actually Make You Glow
We are what we eat, and that means that the foods we eat dictate our health. When people start to monitor their diet, they concern themselves with body fat and muscle building. But if you also spend some time focusing on the right foods to eat for healthy skin, then you can look younger and feel better. Avocado Image via Flickr by ollesvensson Many people are familiar with the long list of health benefits that avocados offer, but not enough people are familiar with how good the avocado can be for your skin. This is a fruit loaded with vitamins C and E, both of which are universally recognized as being very good for your...

Avocado Overload.
I hate cooking and I am terrible at it and anyone who tries to sell me the whole, "But anyone can cook!" has clearly never seen me get mad at a frying pan for simply existing.   But the trouble is, being human, I tend to get hungry several times a day.  Which means I have to deal with food things.Sigh.Thankfully, I've found some very easy (both to make and easy-on-my-blood sugars) food wrangling opportunities to keep me from existing solely on coffee and mental trail mix. You need: Trader Joe's Just Grilled Chicken StripsOne avocadoRaw baby spinachOlive oilPreheat the frying pan.  (Do you preheat a...

48 Questions.
Cherise (PYT!) fleshed out a little "getting to know you" meme for #dsma, and as my synapses are not properly firing this evening, I'm grabbing this to get the gears going again.  (And while it's not a diabetes-centric meme, this one is.)1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?Not that I know of.  But I do know that my father named my brother, my sister, and I.  And there isn't any rhyme or symmetry to our names.  2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?I can't remember - I think it was October.3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?
I like it enough.  It's suffered tremendously since I started using the c...

Fake Food.
"Here is an orange and a clementine and here is an avocado and some cheese and spinach and a banana and oh, here's a strawberry - two strawberries! - and some gwapes and a potato, some eggies, a carrot nose, and if you want to have a pear I have a pear right here."  Birdy verbally rips through her little shopping basket of fake food, offering up her stash of delicious plastic pieces."And if your blood sugar is low, you can have glupose tabs or some of that gwape juice." She furrowed her brow thoughtfully.  "Or a croissant.  But not this one, because it's just PWETEND and it won't hel...

Wheat and spina bifida
Spina bifida and neural tube defects are a devastating condition that affect 1 in 800 births. They represent the failure of the spinal column and overlying tissues to close in utero during the first trimester of pregnancy, leaving the spinal cord, and sometimes the brain, exposed. It is attributable in large part to dietary lack of folate, a B vitamin. If pregnant mothers obtain 400 mcg per day of folate, the incidence of spina bifida is slashed by 72%–not eliminated, but markedly reduced (since there are causes outside of lack of dietary folate). Given the severity of this condition, it is an incredibly small ...

Thirty-Two/Thirty-Three.
Dear Birdy,I lost track of the days and the weeks, and I forgot to write you a letter at the 32 month mark.  Yes, I know you didn't realize it, and I'm pretty sure you didn't care (it's not like you slid me a note that said, "Hey, Maa.  Where's my blog letter, yo?"), but it's been bothering me, so this is a combination letter.  This is just one of the many things I've already screwed up in your little world, and I'm sure it's just one of the many things I will screw up.  So cheers!  I raise my cup of blueberries to you, my darling Bird, the very same blueberries you keep naming before you...

Say “no” to drugs!
Tobechi posted this question about emotional and physical struggles just 2 days into his/her wheat-free experience: It’s only the end of my second day of not eating wheat, and I have has this constant headache since I’ve stopped eating wheat products. My headache seems to be constantly getting worse, but I’m eating fruit, veggies and fish, so I’m not sure if there are any essential vitamins/nutrients I’m lacking? I’ve been having crazy cravings for cereal, bread, crackers, cake, anything with wheat! Will the cravings ever go away? Tobechi is experiencing headache, along with cravings for wheat-containing foods....
