Do you need an oil change?
Fats and oils are a huge piece of the Wheat Belly lifestyle—you should be eating plenty of fats each day in order to lose weight and improve your overall health. You can add butter and oil to your salads and vegetables, and choose the fattiest cuts of meat for your meals. Make sure you’re choosing the right oils! Choose coconut, palm, extra-virgin olive oil, extra-light olive oil, macadamia, avocado, flaxseed, and walnut oil, as well as organic butter and ghee. Don’t be afraid of saving the oils from bacon, beef, and pork. You can use lard and tallow, provided they are not hydrogenated. Minimize use of ...

"An avocado #taco is like a 2-bite couplet in praise of Mexican ingredients: a chewy corn tortilla enclosing creamy slices of the-butter-that-grows-on-trees. Spare additions — a pinch of salt, a spray of lime juice or a sprinkle of chopped onions and cilantro — elevate the avocado, making a taco that's poetically simple and satisfying. @karstenmoran took this photo while on assignment for @nytfood. Am I too skinny?
LM posted this interesting dilemma: “I wonder if anyone has experienced TOO MUCH weight loss with the wheat-free diet? “I have been eliminating obvious sources of wheat for roughly 4 months and have been steadily losing weight. By obvious, I mean that I don’t go out of my way to avoid things that contain trace amounts of wheat, soy sauce, or other sauces thickened with flour. I also don’t totally avoid beer, though I tend not to drink a lot of it. I have tested negative for celiac disease and don’t believe that I have a noticeable sensitivity to wheat. “In the first month or so, I started noticing a...

Test results 2016
About 15 months have zoomed by since my last lab tests and so I was delighted to find no significant change in today's test results. My blood creatinine level remains at 2.0mg/dl, which is right where it was when I was first diagnosed with chronic kidney disease almost seven years ago. Kidney disease tends to progress so I consider avoiding progression an achievement! You can view 7 years of my test results, from initial diagnosis to present, here. I can't say if my attempt to live a healthy lifestyle has been a factor in avoiding progression of the disease but it probably doesn't hurt (and has other benefits...

Creamy avocado taco soup
I've seen a video going around on Facebook the last few weeks where they make regular chicken tortilla soup and then, wait for it, they put an avocado in it and use an immersion blender to create a creamy soup. Naturally people are losing their minds. 'It looks amazing', they say, quickly followed by, 'but soooo much fat!!!!' Luckily, this is not a problem for me and my diet. So today I whipped it up, and let me tell you, the hype is real. And it's so easy to make. What you'll need for 1 bowl-2-3 cups good chicken broth3oz shredded chicken thigh meat1 small avocado (100 grams approximately)1-2 cherry tomatoes for colo...

No folate fortification for the grain-free
Advocates of wheat and grain consumption claim that multiple nutritional deficiencies will develop if we eliminate them from our diet. Not true. Let’s explore this question. Folates are a B vitamin necessary for multiple cell processes, including assembly of DNA and RNA. Folates are therefore especially necessary during pregnancy, as the fetus requires this nutrient to assemble and grow its own genetic code. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for folates and folic acid, which are lumped together as Dietary Folate Equivalents, is 400 mcg per day in adults (male and female), 600 mcg per day in pregnant females. (1 ...

4 Tips for Managing Carbs on Wheat Belly
There is NOT a lot of counting on the Wheat Belly lifestyle, but keeping an eye on your carb intake is among the keys to success. This is especially true when you are just starting out, including starting out on your Wheat Belly 10-Day Grain Detox when you need to reverse the metabolism/insulin/blood sugar/inflammation effects of years of wheat/grain consumption. While we do not count calories or fat grams, we count carbs because 1) the majority of people begin this process with diabetes, pre-diabetes, high blood sugars and insulin resistance that all have to be reversed to regain control over health and weight, and 2) man...

Foods that Nourish, Replenish and Repair
The food we eat serves many purposes.  It satisfies a primal need to fuel our bodies and quell hunger. It connects us to family and friends in lovely ways, during the holidays, in social situations and at the nightly dinner table.  It encourages us to be creative, to try new things, explore different cultures, and savor interesting tastes. And it comforts us, at least temporarily, when we are lonely, sad, anxious or otherwise spent. Food has another very important purpose: it cleanses, repairs, replenishes our body at the most basic cellular level.  In fact, the latest research from the field of  nutrigenomics[1], reve...

The top 5 reasons you still have cravings
Follow the Wheat Belly lifestyle and you should be freed of hunger and cravings except when physiologically appropriate, e.g., you haven’t eaten anything in 8 hours. Many of us eat breakfast, for instance, then have no desire for food until dinner. Or you have a healthy lunch at noon, then forget to eat dinner. In other words, the incessant, rolling, rumbling hunger that plagues modern people that can account for aggressive, even angry, food quests simply goes away and you are left with a soft reminder that it might be nice to eat sometime in the next few hours. If you are following this lifestyle properly, you shoul...

Wheat Belly safe thickeners
In the Wheat Belly lifestyle, we’ve removed all the standard gravy and sauce thickeners from our kitchen shelves: no wheat flour or cornstarch, despite their widespread use in culinary practices. Even though cornstarch is mostly amylose/amylopectin carbohydrates, there are zein protein and other protein residues that are problematic in a grain-free lifestyle, not to mention the excessive carbs, as well. But, when looking for alternative ingredients to use as thickeners, it would be silly to replace one problem ingredient with another problem ingredient, like replacing unfiltered cigarettes with low-tar cigarettesR...

Fat Fest
One of the most common mistakes people make when starting out on the Wheat Belly lifestyle is to remain fearful of fats. They continue to hold onto old misconceptions such as “fats raise cholesterol,” or “fat causes heart disease,” or “fats are calorie-dense and therefore make you fat.” None of this is true, no more true than “healthy whole grains” are a key to overall health. (The rationale dashing all these misconceptions is discussed in detail in Wheat Belly Total Health.) This accounts for why some people, even after removing the gliadin-derived opiates that come from whe...
