Aesthetic Outcome of Propranolol vs Atenolol Treatment of Children with Infantile Haemangioma
This study evaluated the difference in long-term aesthetic outcomes between infantile haemangiomas treated with either propranolol or atenolol, including the perspective of physicians, parents, and children. Children, aged ≥6 years, treated with propranolol or atenolol for infantile haemangioma during infancy, participated in this 2-centre cross-sectional study. The primary endpoint was change in appearance of the infantile haemangioma from pre-treatment to follow-up, using a physician-rated visual analogue scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes were the Patient Observer Scar Assessment Scale (physician- and parent-rated) and a...

Nebivolol and incident cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients compared with nonvasodilatory beta blockers
Conclusion: The vasodilatory beta blocker nebivolol was associated with reduced incident cardiovascular events compared with nonvasodilatory beta blockers. Additional study of other beta blockers is necessary to determine if this is a vasodilatory beta blocker class effect or is specific to nebivolol. Do Thickening Agents Used in Dysphagia Diet Affect Drug Bioavailability?
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of thickened liquids on dissolution rate and bioavailability of levetiracetam as a model drug. Powdered commercial tablets of levetiracetam, carbamazepine, atenolol and cefixime were mixed with water thickened with two commercial thickeners, modified maize starch (MS) and xanthan gam (XG), at three thickness levels: nectar, honey and pudding in test groups, and mixed with only water in the control group. At the first stage, the effects of thickened water on in vitro drug release of 4 drugs (levetiracetam, carbamazepine, atenolol and cefixime) were tested by using dialysis membrane me...

Protein Restriction in the Peri-Pubertal Period Induces Autonomic Dysfunction and Cardiac and Vascular Structural Changes in Adult Rats
Perturbations to nutrition during critical periods are associated with changes in embryonic, fetal or postnatal developmental patterns that may render the offspring more likely to develop cardiovascular disease in later life. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether autonomic nervous system imbalance underpins in the long-term hypertension induced by dietary protein restriction during peri-pubertal period. Male Wistar rats were assigned to groups fed with a low protein (4% protein, LP) or control diet (20.5% protein; NP) during peri-puberty, from post-natal day (PN) 30 until PN60, and then all were returned to a norma...

Should Propranolol Remain the Gold Standard for Treatment of Infantile Hemangioma? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Propranolol Versus Atenolol
CONCLUSION: Propranolol treatment leads to a significantly higher rate of complete response than atenolol. However, its use must be weighed against its greater side effect profile.PMID:35466712 | DOI:10.1177/00034894221089758 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)

First report on the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and cocaine in the coastal waters of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and its related ecological risk assessment
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2022 Apr 22. doi: 10.1007/s11356-022-20312-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe worldwide occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic ecosystems is reason for public concern. These emerging micropollutants include a large and diverse group of organic compounds, with continuous input, high environmental persistence and potential threat to biota and human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate, for the first time, the occurrence of twenty-seven PPCPs of various therapeutic classes (including cocaine and its primary metabolite, benzoylecgonine), in the coastal...
