Antifungal susceptibility of molecularly confirmed Aspergillus species from clinical samples
In conclusions, Aspergillus niger remains the most commonly isolated species from clinical specimens and Aspergillus isolates at our centre are still largely susceptible to amphotericin B, echinocandins and most azoles. This information is valuable in guiding antifungal therapy in the treatment of aspergillosis.PMID:38682846 (Source: Malaysian Journal of Pathology)

Resveratrol has neuroprotective effects and plays an anti-inflammatory role through Dectin-1/p38 pathway in Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis
CONCLUSION: These evidences revealed that RES could exert antifungal effects on A. fumigatus and ameliorate FK through suppressing the Dectin-1/p38 MAPK pathway to down-regulate IL-1β, IL-6, etc. expression and play protective effect on corneal nerves.PMID:38678810 | DOI:10.1016/j.cyto.2024.156626 (Source: Cytokine)

Study protocol to assess aflatoxin M1 health risks versus benefits of dairy consumption in Ethiopian children: an epidemiological trial and risk-benefit analysis
Introduction In Sidama, Ethiopia, animal-source foods can be difficult to access. Milk has important nutrients for child growth, but carries the risk of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) contamination. AFM1 is a metabolite of the mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in dairy feed; cows secrete AFM1 in milk when their feed contains AFB1 produced by Aspergillus fungi in maize, nuts and oilseeds. It is unknown whether AFM1 compromises child growth and health. Methods and analysis This protocol paper describes our study in Sidama to determine the impact of milk consumption and AFM1 on child growth in the first 18 months of life. We will collect b...

An investigation on antimicrobial and anticancer competence of macro red algae under in-vitro condition
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 25:119026. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.119026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to look into the proximate parameters (moisture, ash, total fat, protein, and total carbohydrate) , mineral composition (Fe, Cu, Mg, and Zn ), antimicrobial as well as cytotoxic (anticancer) properties of extracts from the marine red macro algae Gracilaria corticata, Chondrus ocellatus, and Posphyra perforata against a few prevalent microbial pathogens (Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Clostridium tetani, and Treponema pallidum as well as fungal pathogens su...

Genome and secretome insights: unravelling the lignocellulolytic potential of Myceliophthora verrucosa for enhanced hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass
Arch Microbiol. 2024 Apr 27;206(5):236. doi: 10.1007/s00203-024-03974-w.ABSTRACTLignocellulolytic enzymes from a novel Myceliophthora verrucosa (5DR) strain was found to potentiate the efficacy of benchmark cellulase during saccharification of acid/alkali treated bagasse by ~ 2.24 fold, indicating it to be an important source of auxiliary enzymes. The De-novo sequencing and analysis of M. verrucosa genome (31.7 Mb) revealed to encode for 7989 putative genes, representing a wide array of CAZymes (366) with a high proportions of auxiliary activity (AA) genes (76). The LC/MS QTOF based secretome analysis of M. verrucosa showe...

Aspergillus Endogenous Endophthalmitis as a Clue to Identifying a Delayed Lumbosacral Osteomyelitis
CONCLUSION: This case highlights the atypical progression of Aspergillus-induced endogenous endophthalmitis to delayed lumbosacral osteomyelitis in an immunocompetent individual. It highlights the crucial role of a meticulous medical history examination and interdisciplinary collaboration in diagnosing and managing diseases, especially in cases with atypical presentations.PMID:38668792 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2344704 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Exploring the multifaceted bioactivities of < em > Lavandula pinnata L. < /em > essential oil: promising pharmacological activities
This study investigates the biological activities of Lavandula pinnata essential oil (LPEO), an endemic lavender species from the Canary Islands, traditionally used in treating various ailments. Methods: LPEO was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC-MS. Antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH radical scavenging and total antioxidant capacity assays. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by disc diffusion, MIC, MBC, and MFC determination against bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and fungal (Candida glabrata, Rhodotorula glutinis, Aspergillus nige...

Enzymatic Performance of < em > Aspergillus oryzae < /em > α-Amylase in the Presence of Organic Solvents: Activity, Stability, and Bioinformatic Studies
In this study, the enzymatic performance of Aspergillus oryzae α-amylase (Taka-amylase) in various organic solvents both experimentally and computationally was investigated. The results demonstrated that ethanol and ether sustain Taka-amylase activity up to 20% to 25% of the organic solvents, with ether providing twice the stability of ethanol. Molecular dynamics simulations further revealed that Taka-amylase has a more stable structure in ether and ethanol relative to other organic solvents. In addition, the analysis showed that the loop located near the active site in the AB-domain is a vulnerable site for enzyme destab...
