The impact of processing technology on microbial community composition and functional properties of Beninese maize ogi
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Mar 17;416:110683. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110683. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraditionally fermented maize starch, called ogi, is produced to prepare akpan, a yoghurt-like street food widely consumed in Benin. Current maize ogi production practices were compared to assess the impact of different processing technologies on the characteristics of the fermented product as a basis to determine best practices. Maize starch slurry samples were collected from processors in five municipalities in southern Benin and analysed before fermentation (starch samples) and after spontaneous fermentati...

Microbial innovations in chromium remediation: mechanistic insights and diverse applications
AbstractThe ubiquity of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from industrial activities poses a critical environmental threat due to its persistence, toxicity and mutagenic potential. Traditional physico-chemical methods for its removal often entail significant environmental drawbacks. Recent advancements in remediation strategies have emphasized nano and bioremediation techniques as promising avenues for cost-effective and efficient Cr(VI) mitigation. Bioremediation harnesses the capabilities of biological agents like microorganisms, and algae to mitigate heavy metal contamination, while nano-remediation employs nanoparticles for...

Combined allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis: A case report and literature review
Respir Med Case Rep. 2024 Mar 19;48:102012. doi: 10.1016/j.rmcr.2024.102012. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA 27-year-old female visited our hospital with a history of asthma, peripheral blood eosinophilia, increased total IgE, Aspergillus fumigatus specific IgE, reversible mild bronchiectasis, sinusitis, bronchial mucus plugs and cultivation of Aspergillus from BALF. Glucocorticoids therapy is effective. These results met the diagnostic criteria for both allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPM) and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). Special attention should be paid to the possibility of both diseases co...

Synthesis, antimicrobial, and in silico studies of c5'- < em > O < /em > -substituted cytidine derivatives: cinnamoylation leads to improvement of antimicrobial activity
In this study, cytidine (1) was first exposed to react with cinnamoyl chloride in N,N-dimethylformamide, and trimethylamine to obtain 5'-O-(cinnamoyl)cytidine, which was further treated with several acylating agents to obtain a series of 2',3'-di-O-acyl derivatives. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were established through spectral, analytical, and physicochemical techniques. In vitro antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated, and the antimicrobial effect was greater than that of the precursor compound; in particular, compound 3 exhibited the most promising activity. Cytotoxicity measurements revealed that t...

Conclusions: The findings from this study indicate that biosynthesized AgNPs from Solanum lycopersicum exhibit promising antimicrobial and antioxidant properties against UTI pathogens, including strains resistant to multiple antibiotics. This suggests their potential as an effective alternative treatment for UTIs. Further research is warranted to fully understand the mechanisms of action and to explore the therapeutic applications of these nanoparticles in combating UTIs.PMID:38541241 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030515 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Analysis of the remediation competence of Aspergillus flavus biomass in wastewater of the dyeing industry: An in-vitro study
Environ Res. 2024 Mar 26:118705. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118705. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe dyeing industry effluent causes severe environmental pollution and threatens the native flora and fauna. The current study aimed to analyze the physicochemical parameters of dyeing industry wastewater collected in different sites (K1, E2, S3, T4, and V5), as well as the metal tolerance and decolourisation ability of Aspergillus flavus. Furthermore, the optimal biomass quantity and temperatures required for efficient bioremediation were investigated. Approximately five dyeing industry wastewater samples (K1, E2, S3, T4, and...

Ochratoxin A induces hepatic and renal toxicity in mice through increased oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and multiple cell death mechanisms
In this study, we developed and established acute OTA toxicity conditions in mice, which received daily oral doses of OTA between 0.5 up to 8 mg/kg body weight up to 7 days and were subjected to histological and biochemical analysis to characterize renal and hepatic damage. Oral administration of OTA for 7 days resulted in loss of body weight in a dose-dependent manner and increased the levels of serum biomarkers of hepatic and renal damage. The kidney was more sensitive to OTA-induced damage than the liver. In addition to necrosis, OTA induced hepatic and renal apoptosis in dose- and time-dependent manners. Especially, a ...
