Renal-protective effect of Asparagus officinalis aqueous extract against lead-induced nephrotoxicity mouse model
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Oct 14. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-30280-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLead is one of the cursed substances that threaten all human life. Lead poisoning can occur through food or water contaminations and it is hard to be detected. This incognito metal accumulates over time and resides in the liver, kidneys, and brain tissues leading to serious medical conditions, affecting organ functions, causing failure, kidney tubule degeneration, and destroying neuronal development. However, known metal chelators have bad negative effects. Asparagus officinalis (AO) is a promising herb; its root extract...

Schweinfurthiamide, a new alkaloid isolated from the tuber roots of < em > Asparagus flagellaris < /em > Baker (Liliaceae)
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Sep 18:1-7. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2023.2257358. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe phytochemical investigations of the tuber roots of Asparagus flagellaris led to the isolation of a new alkaloid, schweinfurthiamide (1) and eight known compounds. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic techniques 1D and 2D NMR (1H, 13C, COSY, HMBC, HMQC, HSQC-TOCSY). The absolute configuration of 1 was unambiguously determined using DP4+ calculations. Compound 1 showed significant cytotoxicity against MCF-7 (breast cancer), NCI-H460 (lung cancer), and Hela (cervical cancer) cancer cell ...

Successful full-length genomic cloning and characterization of site-specific nick structures of Phytophthora endornaviruses 2 and 3 in yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae
In this study, we analyzed the nick structure in the RNA genomes of PEV2 and PEV3 in the host oomycetes. Northern blot hybridization using positive and negative strand-specific RNA probes targeting the 5′ and 3′ regions of PEV2 and PEV3 RNA genomes revealed approximately 1.0 kilobase (kb) RNA fragments located in the 5′ regions of the two genomes. 3’ RACE analysis determined that the size of the RNA fragments were 958 nucleotides (nt) for PEV2 and 968 nt for PEV3. We have successfully constructed full-length cDNA clones of the entire RNA genomes of PEV2 and PEV3 using a homologous recombination system in the yeas...

De novo sequencing, assembly, and characterization of Asparagus racemosus transcriptome and analysis of expression profile of genes involved in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway
Asparagus racemosus is known for its diverse content of secondary metabolites, i.e., saponins, alkaloids, and a wide range of flavonoids. Flavonoids, including phenols and polyphenols, have a significant role in plant physiology and are synthesized in several tissues. Despite the diverse role of flavonoids, genetic information is limited for flavonoid biosynthesis pathways in A. racemosus. The current study explores full-scale functional genomics information of A. racemosus by de novo transcriptome sequencing using Illumina paired-end sequencing technology to elucidate the genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis pathways....

Effect of a Standardized Extract of < em > Asparagus officinalis < /em > Stem (ETAS ®50) on Cognitive Function, Psychological Symptoms, and Behavior in Patients with Dementia: A Randomized Crossover Trial
Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2023 Aug 22;2023:9960094. doi: 10.1155/2023/9960094. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTDementia is a disease of substantial national concern in a superaging society in Japan. Thus, the treatments targeting this disease are of high priority. However, pharmaceutical treatments are under development and invasive. Hence, many alternative treatments, which are less invasive, are tried, and some of them are supposed to work for dementia symptoms. ETAS®50 is one of these treatments. ETAS®50, a standardized extract of the Asparagus officinalis stem with heat shock protein-inducing activity, is a functi...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 1704: Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of the WRKY Gene Family in Asparagus officinalis
In this study, 11 cis-acting elements of WRKY family were selected, among which auxin, gibberellin, abscisic acid, salicylic acid and other hormone-regulated induction elements were involved. In addition, environmental stress (such as drought stress and low-temperature response) also accounted for a large proportion. Interestingly, we analyzed a total of two tandem duplicate genes and 13 segmental duplication genes, suggesting that this is related to the amplification of the WRKY gene family. Transcriptome data analysis showed that WRKY family genes could regulate plant growth and development by up-regulating and down-regu...

Nutritional Composition Profiles and Quality Evaluation of Different Cultivars of Asparagus Officinalis with Potential as Functional Foods and Health-Care Products
This study investigated six nutritional compositions in ten A. officinalis cultivars, including amino acid, mineral substance, carbohydrate, vitamin C, protein and total sugar. Five chemometrics methods were further employed to evaluate their quality. The results consistently showed that ten varieties were divided into three grades as nutritional composition differences. HuaMiaoF1, JinGuan and FeiCuiMingZhu were grouped into cluster3 with the best quality, and Atlas and Jersey Giant were grouped into cluster1 with the lowest quality. Therefore, HuaMiaoF1, JinGuan and FeiCuiMingZhu can be suggested as good raw materials for...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5786: Wild Asparagus Shoots Constitute a Healthy Source of Bioactive Compounds
Guil-Guerrero Wild Asparagus shoots are consumed worldwide, although most species remain understudied. In this work, a total of four wild Asparagus species were collected from different locations and analyzed compared with farmed A. officinalis. Shoots were screened for (i) phenolic compounds by HPLC-DAD and LC-MS; (ii) total phenolic acids and total flavonoid content by the Folin–Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride methods; (iii) vitamin C by HPLC-DAD; (iv) antioxidant activity by the DPPH and ABTS•+ methods; and (v) the in vitro antiproliferative activities against HT-29 colorectal cancer cells...
