Gene structure and potential regulation of the lycopene cyclase genes in < em > Bixa orellana < /em > L
Physiol Mol Biol Plants. 2023 Oct;29(10):1423-1435. doi: 10.1007/s12298-023-01384-8. Epub 2023 Nov 13.ABSTRACTLycopene cyclases (LCYs) are a key branching point in regulating the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway in plants. Bixa orellana L. is characterized by the presence in its seed of bixin, an apocarotenoid of significant importance in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Gene analysis provides the opportunity to investigate the LCY gene structure in plant species and its relationship with the synthesis of carotenoids. Coding sequences of the LCY genes were retrieved from a B. orellana genome DNA. Boβ-LCY1...

Application of different concentrations of the natural dye potassium norbixinate (annatto) in polyamide 6.6 fabrics
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Nov 11:1-8. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2023.2280178. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolyamide fabrics were dyed with concentrations ranging from 4% to 0.25% (o.w.f.) of the natural dye, potassium norbixinate (annatto). The exhaustion, chromatic coordinates, colouristic intensity (K/S), and fastness to washing and rubbing were evaluated. The natural dye was characterised, and its maximum absorption peaks were identified at 452 nm and 482 nm through UV-vis scanning. Its main chemical groups were identified by FTIR-ATR. All dyeings exhibited high exhaustion percentage, with a maximum of 98.4% for 1% dye concentra...

Effect of the Association of Fixed Oils from < em > Abelmoschus esculentus < /em > (L.) Moench, < em > Euterpe oleracea < /em > Martius, < em > Bixa orellana < /em > Linn é and Chronic SM < sup > ® < /sup > on Atherogenic Dyslipidemia in Wistar Rats
This study investigated the effects of treatments with oils from A. esculentus, E. oleracea, B. orellana, and Chronic SM® on Cocos nucifera L. saturated-fat-induced dyslipidemia. The chromatographic profile showed the majority presence of unsaturated fatty acids in the tested oils. The quantification of tocotrienols and geranylgeraniol in OFBO and CHR was obtained. Treatments with OFEO, OFAE, OFBO, and CHR were able to significantly reduce glycemia, as well as hypertriglyceridemia, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol, besides increasing HDL-cholesterol. The treatments inhibited the formation of atheromatous plaques in ...

Detection of botanical adulterants in saffron powder
Anal Bioanal Chem. 2023 Aug 17. doi: 10.1007/s00216-023-04853-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSaffron is a unique spice obtained by drying stigmas of saffron flowers (Crocus sativus L.). Due to its high price, economically motivated adulteration occurs relatively often. The presented study aimed to develop an effective strategy for the detection of the following potential botanical adulterants used for a saffron substitution or dilution: safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), calendula (Calendula officinalis L.), turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), achiote (Bixa orellana L.), red pepper (Capsicum spp.), mountain arnica (Arnica mon...

Exploration of the Production of Three Thiodiketopiperazines by an Endophytic Fungal Strain of Cophinforma mamane
In this study, we focused on the production of 3 thiodiketopiperazines (TDKPs) botryosulfuranols A-C produced by an endophytic strain of Cophinforma mamane isolated from the leaves of Bixa orellana L collected in the Peruvian Amazon. We studied the time-course production of botryosulfuranols A-C during 28 days and evaluated the variations in the production of secondary metabolites, including the TDKPs, produced by C. mamane in response to different culture media, light versus dark conditions and different incubation times. We observed a short time-frame production of botryosulfuranol C while its production was significantl...
