Scedosporium boydii finding in an immunocompromised patient and review of the literature
CONCLUSIONS: Although the patient died due to complications of a Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis refractory to treatment, the progression of the fungal disease, although slow, was favourable in the early phases of the treatment due to a correct diagnosis and the antifungal susceptibility test carried out. Clinical cases of this nature highlight the need to increase the epidemiological study of these microorganisms, as well as the proper treatment of the diseases caused, in order to achieve early diagnoses that reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients.PMID:38326154 | DOI:10.1016/j.riam.2023.10.001 (Source: Revista Iberoa...

SAR study of N'-(Salicylidene)heteroarenecarbohydrazides as promising antifungal agents
Bioorg Med Chem. 2024 Jan 24;100:117610. doi: 10.1016/j.bmc.2024.117610. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClinically available antifungal drugs have therapeutic limitations due to toxicity, narrow spectrum of activity, and intrinsic or acquired drug resistance. Thus, there is an urgent need for new broad-spectrum antifungal agents with low toxicity and a novel mechanism of action. In this context, we have successfully identified several highly promising lead compounds, i.e., aromatic N'-(salicylidene)carbohydrazides, exhibiting excellent antifungal activities against Cryptococcus neoformans, Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumi...

Mucormycosis-induced hypercalcemia: a case report
AbstractHypercalcemia is a vital laboratory marker because it can show underlying severe diseases like cancer and infections. Of all the causes of hypercalcemia, primary hyperparathyroidism, and malignancies are the most common, but granulomatous diseases, such as certain fungal infections, can also be the cause. Here we describe the case of a 29-year-old woman, an insulin-dependent diabetic, found unconscious and tachypneic at home. In the emergency room, the medical team diagnosed diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and acute kidney injury (AKI). During hospitalization, despite resolving acidemia, persistent hypercalcemia attrac...

Unveiling the role of serine o-acetyltransferase in drug resistance and oxidative stress tolerance in Leishmania donovani through the regulation of thiol-based redox metabolism
Free Radic Biol Med. 2024 Mar;213:371-393. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2024.01.039. Epub 2024 Jan 23.ABSTRACTUnderstanding the unique metabolic pathway of L. donovani is crucial for comprehending its biology under oxidative stress conditions. The de novo cysteine biosynthetic pathway of L. donovani is absent in humans and its product, cysteine regulates the downstream components of trypanothione-based thiol metabolism, important for maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. The role of serine o-acetyl transferase (SAT), the first enzyme of this pathway remains unexplored. In order to investigate the role of SAT protein, we ...

Exploration of Risk Factors of the Onset of Antibiotics-induced Acute Kidney Injury and Its Transfer to Chronic Kidney Disease Using the Medical Information Database
In this study, using the medical information database of Hamamatsu University Hospital, we investigated the risk factors that accelerate the onset of drug-induced AKI or its progression to CKD in patients who received aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs) or glycopeptide antibiotics (GPs), which are strongly associated with drug-induced AKI and CKD. We performed logistic regression analysis using patients' background, laboratory test results, and concomitant drug use, among other such factors as explanatory variables and drug-induced AKI or CKD onset as objective variables to explore the risk factors for drug-induced AKI and CK...
