Risk factors for short-term prognosis of end-stage liver disease complicated by invasive pulmonary aspergillosis
ConclusionsGlucocorticoid exposure, invasive procedures, and broad-spectrum antibiotic exposure increased the risk of IPA in ESLD patients. AmB alone or combined with other antifungals may serve as an economical, safe, and effective treatment option for ESLD-IPA. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases)

Quinine and chloroquine: potential preclinical candidates for the treatment of tegumentary leishmaniasis
This study aimed at evaluating the susceptibility of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis to chloroquine (CQ) and quinine (QN), alone or in combination with amphotericin B (AFT) and pentamidine (PTN). In the in vitro tests, first, we evaluated the growth inhibition of 50% of promastigotes (IC50) and cytotoxicity for HepG2 and THP-1 cells (CC50). The IC50 values of AFT and PNT were below 1 µM, while the IC50 values of CQ and QN ranged between 4 - 13 µM. Concerning cytotoxicity, CC50 values ranged between 7 and 30 µM for AFT and PNT, and between 22 to 157 µM for the antimalarials. We also calculated the Selectivity Index (SI), wh...

Scedosporium boydii finding in an immunocompromised patient and review of the literature
CONCLUSIONS: Although the patient died due to complications of a Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis refractory to treatment, the progression of the fungal disease, although slow, was favourable in the early phases of the treatment due to a correct diagnosis and the antifungal susceptibility test carried out. Clinical cases of this nature highlight the need to increase the epidemiological study of these microorganisms, as well as the proper treatment of the diseases caused, in order to achieve early diagnoses that reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients.PMID:38326154 | DOI:10.1016/j.riam.2023.10.001 (Source: Revista Iberoa...
