Warning to Mature Students taking A Levels for Med entry (non-grad)
Hey,
After a chat with a university admissions advisor today, I just thought I would give a few of you a heads up in case it is useful.
I was informed today that for the majority of mature students applying for medicine that are not taking the grad route you need 3 A Levels and an AS Level to even be considered and that any A Levels that you may have previously taken at school etc, they expire/are no longer valid after two years of taking them.
I was also told I would definitely need at least a years worth of work experience in a medical setting (and cannot be admin etc). Then on top of that obviously a good UKCAT result....

Kisses of Death in the Graduate School Application Process
I found a research article (Appleby and Appleby, 2006) on the graduate application process a while back, and thought I would share it with people here.
Basically, the investigators, while implementing a survey among admissions committees for graduate programs in psychology (88 chairs), identified five KODs (Kisses of Death):
Quote:
(a) Damaging personal statements: personal mental health, excessive altruism, excessive self disclosure, professional inappropriateness.
(b) Harmful letters of recommendation: undesirable applicant characteristics, inappropriate sources.
(c) Lack of program information: p...

"Z-Pak" May Raise Risk of Serious Cardiac Arrhythmias
A warning from the FDA has stated that use of Z-Pak may increase the risk of serious, life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, especially in patients with existing irregular heartbeats. How will this warning affect the way physicians prescribe this widely-used antibiotic? Will you simply avoid prescribing to those with pre-existing conditions, or will you be more mindful in all patients? (Source: Doc2Doc BMJ Cardiology)
