Vitamin D nutritional status in early pregnancy and its relationship with periconceptional multiple micronutrients supplementation
CONCLUSIONS: Among women in Beijing, serum concentrations of vitamin D in early pregnancy are relatively low, and the rates of deficiency and insufficiency are high. Taking MMs during the periconceptional period could improve this situation.PMID:38494687 | DOI:10.6133/apjcn.202403_33(1).0006 (Source: Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Persistence of vitamin D deficiency among Italian patients with acute myocardial infarction
CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent and persistent in patients with AMI despite a trend towards increasing 25(OH)D concentrations over the years. The frequent lockdowns did not reduce the levels of 25(OH)D in the fourth group. Low levels of 25(OH)D are an independent predictor of mortality.PMID:38494368 | DOI:10.1016/j.numecd.2024.02.007 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Effect of preoperative vitamin D on postoperative atrial fibrillation incidence after coronary artery bypass grafting
ConclusionsOur findings revealed that high-dose vitamin D supplementation before CABG surgery significantly reduced the incidence of POAF. Further multicenter randomized trials with larger sample sizes are certainly warranted to confirm our results. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Endocrine and non-endocrine causes of fatigue in adults with Neurofibromatosis type 1
ConclusionsEndocrine and non-endocrine disorders were equally present in our cohort of NF1 adults with and without fatigue. This suggests that the high prevalence of fatigue in NF1 adults is not explained by these somatic disorders. An alternative explanation for fatigue might be deficits in cognitive functioning and other neuropsychological processes in NF1. Based on our results and review of the literature, we provide a clinical algorithm for the approach to fatigue in NF1 adults, including somatic and psychological assessment. Critical Role for 24-Hydroxylation in Homeostatic Regulation of Vitamin D Metabolism
CONCLUSIONS: Suppression of 24-hydroxylase provides a first line of defense against symptomatic VitD-deficiency by decreasing metabolic clearance of 1,25(OH)2D. The 1,25(OH)2D/24,25(OH)2D ratio provides a useful index of VitD status since it incorporates 24,25(OH)2D levels and therefore, provides insight into 24-hydroxylase activity. When VitD availability is limited, this suppresses 24-hydroxylase activity - thereby decreasing the level of 24,25(OH)2D and increasing the 1,25(OH)2D/24,25(OH)2D ratio. Thus, an increased 1,25(OH)2D/24,25(OH)2D ratio signifies triggering of homeostatic regulation, which occurs at early stages...

Micronutrient status in patients with diabetic foot ulcers: A cross-sectional study in Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: Vitamin B12 deficiency is significantly associated with patients who had an amputation; having charcot foot and folic acid revealed a vital relationship among patients with DFUs having CVD. Comprehensive research is a pressing need to enable deeper awareness of micronutrient deficiencies in patients with diabetes.PMID:38482321 | PMC:PMC10931904 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1109_23 (Source: Primary Care)

Forgetting the Frail: National Trends in Vitamin D Prescription After Fragility Fracture-A Large Insurance Claims Database Study
This study aims to characterize vitamin D prescription rates after three common fragility fractures in patients older than 50 years and explore potential factors influencing prescription rates.METHODS: The study used the PearlDiver Database, identifying patients older than 50 years with hip fractures, spinal compression fractures, or distal radius fractures between 2010 and 2020. Patient demographics, comorbidities, and vitamin D prescription rates were analyzed. Statistical methods included chi-square analysis and univariate and multivariable analyses.RESULTS: A total of 3,214,294 patients with fragility fractures were in...

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudies on the prognostic value of the blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D level have yielded controversial results in prostate cancer (PCa) patients. This updated meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between pretreatment 25-hydroxyvitamin D level with survival outcomes among patients with clinically localized PCa. PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases were searched to identify studies evaluating the association of pretreatment 25-hydroxyvitamin D level with PCSM and all-cause mortality among clinically localized PCa pat...

The immune cell transcriptome is modulated by vitamin D < sub > 3 < /sub > supplementation in people with a first demyelinating event participating in a randomized placebo-controlled trial
Clin Immunol. 2024 Mar 11:110183. doi: 10.1016/j.clim.2024.110183. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for developing multiple sclerosis. The PrevANZ trial was conducted to determine if vitamin D3 supplementation can prevent recurrent disease activity in people with a first demyelinating event. As a sub-study of this trial, we investigated the effect of supplementation on peripheral immune cell gene expression. Participants were randomized to 1000, 5000 or 10,000 international units daily of vitamin D3 or placebo. Peripheral blood was collected at baseline and 12 weeks and sent for ribonucle...
