A review of dairy food intake for improving health among black geriatrics in the US
J Natl Med Assoc. 2024 Feb 15:S0027-9684(24)00014-2. doi: 10.1016/j.jnma.2024.01.017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe transition to older adulthood is generally marked by progressive declines in body composition, metabolism, cognitive function, and immunity. For socially disadvantaged geriatric populations such as Black Americans, this life stage may also include additional stressors, including dealing with discrimination, poor access to healthcare, and food insecurity. These types of chronic stressors are linked to a higher allostatic load, which is associated with accelerated biological aging, higher rates of adverse h...

Global DNA Methylation Levels Viz-a-Viz Genetic and Biochemical Variations in One Carbon Metabolic Pathway: An Exploratory Study from North India
This study aimed to understand the variations in global DNA methylation levels with respect to selected genetic (CBS 844ins68, MTRR A66G, MTR A2756G, and MTHFR C677T polymorphisms) and biochemical (folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine) markers associated with OCMP among healthy North Indian adults. The study has been conducted among 1095 individuals of either sex (69.5% females), aged 30-75 years. A sample of 5 mL of blood was collected from each participant. Homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12 levels were determined using the chemiluminescence technique. Restriction digestion was performed for genotyping MTRR A66G, MTR...

Hyaluronan/B12-chitosan polyelectrolyte complex for oral colistin administration
This study describes the procedure for obtaining CT-containing PECs based on HA and CS modified with cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12). In this case, vitamin B12 is used as a targeting ligand because it is absorbed in the ileum via specific transporter proteins. The resulting PECs had a hydrodynamic size of about 284 nm and a positive ζ-potential of about 26 mV; the encapsulation efficiency was 88.2 % and the CT content was 42.2 μg/mg. The developed systems provided a two-phase drug release: about 50 % of the CT was released in 0.5-1 h, and about 60 % of the antibiotic was cumulatively released in 5 h. The antimicrobial activ...

Combined effect of Neurotropin ® and methylcobalamin on postherpetic neuralgia in mice infected with herpes simplex virus type-1
Postherpetic pain (PHP) is difficult to control. Although Neurotropin ® (NTP) and methylcobalamin (MCB) are often prescribed to treat the pain, the efficacy of combined treatment for PHP remains imcompletely understood. (Source: Journal of Dermatological Science)

Hydrogen bioelectrogeneration with pH-resilient and oxygen-tolerant cobalt apoenzyme-saccharide
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Feb 9. doi: 10.1039/d3cc06185j. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydrogenases are enzymes that catalyze the reversible conversion of protons to hydrogen gas, using earth-abundant metals such as nickel and/or iron. This characteristic makes them promising for sustainable energy applications, particularly in clean hydrogen production. However, their widespread use faces challenges, including a limited pH range and susceptibility to oxygen. In response to these issues, SacCoMyo is introduced as an artificial enzyme. SacCoMyo is designed by replacing the native metal in the myoglobin (Myo) scaffold with a...

Development of a diet quality score and adherence to the Swiss dietary recommendations for vegans
CONCLUSION: The newly developed DQS-V provides a single score for estimating diet quality among vegan adults. Further validation studies examining the DQS-V in relation to an independent dietary assessment method and to biomarkers of nutritional intake and status are still needed before the general application of the DQS-V.PMID:38291526 | PMC:PMC10829326 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00498-3 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)
