Association between vitamin B12 deficiency and risk of Paediatric narcolepsy: Evidence from cross-sectional study and Mendelian randomization analysis
CONCLUSION: This study establishes connections at both phenotypic and genetic levels, associating vitamin B12 deficiency with an increased risk of paediatric narcolepsy. These findings provide innovative perspectives for clinical strategies in the prevention and treatment of narcolepsy.PMID:38484414 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2024.03.002 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Aging-accumulated methylmalonic acid serum levels at breast cancer diagnosis are not associated with distant metastases
CONCLUSION: Baseline serum MMA levels in patients with breast cancer are not correlated with secondary distant metastasis. Evidence in the mouse model suggests that the presence of a tumor perturbates MMA levels.PMID:38472594 | DOI:10.1007/s10549-024-07260-7 (Source: Cell Research)

Dietary composition of adult eosinophilic esophagitis patients is related to disease severity
ConclusionDietary composition may be related to inflammation in adult EoE patients. High-quality and anti-inflammatory diets may be a promising adjuvant therapy in the dietary management of EoE. (Source: Immunity, Inflammation and Disease)

Treatment Effect Heterogeneity in Hemodynamic Responses to Hydroxocobalamin
Khandekar and colleagues present a retrospective analysis of hydroxocobalamin use in cardiac surgical patients.1 The authors theorize that intraoperative administration of the drug might be more effective since nitric oxide mediated vasoplegia is possibly more intense during and shortly after bypass. The authors ’ question is in the category of treatment effect heterogeneity, that is the extent to which responses differ across a study population. In this case, the sub-groups of interest are patients given hydroxocobalamin intraoperatively versus postoperatively. (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia)

A new perspective on vitamin B12 deficiency in rheumatology: a case-based review
In this study, we present three cases of patients with neuropathic pain, depression, fatigue, and muscle weakness, initially attributed to a rheumatic disease, which almost completely resolved after implementing vitamin B12 supplementation. Furthermore, we provide an overview of current scientific reports regarding the potential use of cobalamin in rheumatology. Treatment of pain and neuropathy, often very challenging in long-lasting rheumatic diseases, can be more effective after a course of vitamin B12, even when no apparent deficiency is detected in laboratory tests. Considering recent research demonstrating vitamin B12...

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in a kidney transplanted patient with methylmalonic acidemia: Metabolic susceptibility and the role of immunosuppression
We report a patient suffering from MMA cblB who developed end-stage kidney disease at 18 years of age. Kidney transplantation allowed him to recover normal kidney function and good metabolic control. Unfortunately, after two decades, he developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma and severe chemotherapy toxicity which led to his death. The risk of lymphoproliferative diseases is known to increase after solid organ transplantation. However, in MMA, factors including mitochondrial dysfunction and oncometabolites, may further increase the risk of malignancy and drug toxicity. Our report highlights the importance of considering the increas...

Higher Dietary Methyl Donor Micronutrient Consumption is Associated with Higher Muscle Strength in Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study
In conclusion, our findings revealed that higher dietary methyl donor micronutrient consumption is associated with enhanced muscle strength. As a result, advice on a higher intake of methyl donor-rich foods including grains, nuts, dairy, and seafood might be recommended by dietitians as a general guideline to adhere to. Additional prospective studies are needed to confirm the findings.PMID:38443195 | DOI:10.1017/S0007114524000424 (Source: The British Journal of Nutrition)
