Overview of long COVID in Brazil: a preliminary analysis of a survey to think about health policies
Cad Saude Publica. 2024 Apr 29;40(4):e00094623. doi: 10.1590/0102-311XPT094623. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTCharacterized by symptoms that remain or appear for the first time within three months of SARS-CoV-2 infection, long COVID can manifest itself in different ways, including in non-hospitalized or asymptomatic cases. Thus, this study offers an overview of long COVID in Brazil, especially of its diagnosis, symptoms, and challenges for new health management. Data from a study that investigated long COVID in people affected by COVID-19 were used. These original data stem from a survey with adult Brazilians (aged 18 years or ...

Preventive effects of vasohibin-2-targeting peptide vaccine for diabetic nephropathy
In this study, the preventive effects of the VASH2-targeting peptide vaccine against glomerular injury were examined in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mouse model. The mice were subcutaneously injected with the vaccine at two doses 2 weeks apart and then intraperitoneally injected with 50 mg/kg STZ for 5 consecutive days. Glomerular injury was evaluated 20 weeks after the first vaccination. Treatment with the VASH2-targeting peptide vaccine successfully induced circulating anti-VASH2 antibody without inflammation in major organs. Although the vaccination did not affect blood glucose levels, it significantly preven...

Evaluations are inherently comparative, but are compared to what?
Discussion focuses on how the present findings inform understanding of the nature of the decision sample and identify new research directions for the longstanding question of how comparison standards influence decision making. Factors associated with adherence to the COVID-19 vaccine in pregnant women
CONCLUSION: there was evidence of low adherence to the vaccination schedule against COVID-19 during the gestational period, considering the number of recommended doses and the interval between them. Therefore, professionals in their clinical practice must make pregnant women aware of the importance of immunization and compliance with the vaccination schedule.BACKGROUND: (1) Maternal vaccination plays a significant role in preventing and combating maternal morbidity. (2) Some factors may influence acceptance or hesitancy of the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy. (3) Safety regarding the effectiveness of vaccination against ...

Consequences of COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Healthcare Providers During the First 10 Months of Vaccine Availability: Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare provider COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy was found to have numerous consequences. By understanding the scope and extent of these consequences, healthcare leaders, researchers, and HCPs can work together to protect providers, patients, and healthcare systems.PMID:38693882 | DOI:10.1177/08445621241251711 (Source: The Canadian Journal of Nursing Research)

Respiratory syncytial virus vaccination during pregnancy for improving infant outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this review suggest that maternal RSV vaccination reduces laboratory-confirmed RSV hospitalisations in infants. There are no safety concerns about intrauterine growth restriction and congenital abnormalities. We must be careful in drawing conclusions about other safety outcomes owing to the low and very low certainty of the evidence. The evidence available to date suggests RSV vaccination may have little or no effect on stillbirth, maternal death, and infant death (although the evidence for infant death is very uncertain). However, there may be a safety signal warranting further investigation r...

Follow-up of Immune Response in Patients with Common Variable Immunodeficiency following SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination
In this study, we evaluated the humoral and cellular immune responses after four doses of mRNA-1273 and one BNT162b2 bivalent vaccine in a cohort of patients with CVID and XLA. The response in this population was lower than in the control group. However, the administration of the third dose improved the number of patients with seroconversion and the intensity of the humoral response, as well as the number of patients with a positive cellular response. Finally, the administration of the fourth and fifth doses improves the antibody titer and neutralization against wild type variant, but not against the prevalent XBB1.5 varia...

Comparative proteomics analysis of samples from hepatic cystic echinococcosis patients using data-independent acquisition approach
This study aimed to assess the specific proteins that are potential candidates for the development of a vaccine against E. granulosus. The data-independent acquisition approach was employed to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in E. granulosus samples. The Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis was employed to identify several noteworthy proteins. Results: The DEPs in E. granulosus samples were identified (245 pericystic wall vs. parasite-free yellowish granuloma (PYG, 1725 PY vs. PYG, 2274 PN vs. PYG). Further examination of these distinct proteins...

Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty rejection after SARS-COV2 infection or vaccination: 2-year retrospective study
CONCLUSION: Although the risk of endothelial graft rejection (EGR) associated with COVID-19 infection or vaccination appears to be extremely low, there may be a causative relationship, especially in patients with pre-existing risk factors for EGR. A temporary increase in anti-rejection treatment following COVID-19 infection or vaccination is recommended, especially in patients with pre-existing risk factors, along with closer monitoring during the subsequent 4 to 8 weeks.PMID:38696860 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfo.2024.104117 (Source: Journal Francais d Ophtalmologie)
