Underdiagnosis of Borderline oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (BORSA) - Case series
We report five cases of BORSA blood-stream infections in a university teaching hospital. All isolates were found to be susceptible to cefoxitin using disk diffusion, resistant to oxacillin using automated MIC method, and did not harbour mecA gene. All patients were suscessfully treated with anti-MRSA antibiotics, and removal of primary sources were done if identified. A more cost-effective method for screening and diagnosis of BORSA is needed in addition to cefoxitin disk diffusion test, in order to monitor the spread, and to enable routine detection and treatment of this pathogen.PMID:38682849 (Source: Malaysian Journal of Pathology)

Prevalence of AmpC beta-lactamase and extended spectrum beta-lactamase co-producer in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species in a teaching hospital
CONCLUSION: Distinguishing between AmpC β-lactamase and ESBL-producing organisms has epidemiological significance as well as therapeutic importance. Moreover, AmpC β-lactamase and ESBLs co-producing organisms can lead to false negative ESBL confirmatory test. Therefore, knowing the local prevalence can guide the clinician in navigating the treatment.PMID:38682847 (Source: Malaysian Journal of Pathology)

"Teaching capital"- a sociological analysis of medical educator portfolios for promotion
Adv Health Sci Educ Theory Pract. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1007/s10459-024-10333-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMedical educator portfolios (MEP) are increasingly recognized as a tool for developing and documenting teaching performance in Health Professions Education. However, there is a need to better understand the complex interplay between institutional guidelines and how teachers decode those guidelines and assign value to teaching merits. To gain a deeper understanding of this dynamic, this study employed a sociological analysis to understand how medical educators aspiring to professorships use MEPs to display their tea...

Assessing Concordance of Results: A Comparative Study of the Manual and Automated Urinalysis Methods
CONCLUSION: The automated and manual methods showed similar performances and good correlation, especially for physical and chemical examination. However, manual microscopy remains necessary to classify urine sediments, particularly for bacteria and yeast-like cells. Future research with larger samples could help validate automated urinalysis for wider clinical use and identify areas requiring improved automated detection capabilities.PMID:38682117 | PMC:PMC11055648 | DOI:10.1155/2024/6963423 (Source: Biomed Res)

A Comparison of Virtual Reality and Traditional Audio-Recorded Hearing Voices Simulations: Their Impact on Empathy in Health Care Students
Nurs Educ Perspect. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1097/01.NEP.0000000000001271. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmpathy is essential to the development of communication skills. Simulating psychosis to develop empathy for mental health patients is complex; we hypothesized that virtual reality (VR) would be effective in increasing empathy in health care students. This experimental study compared the effectiveness of a VR simulation with a traditional hearing voices simulation as measured by the Kiersma-Chen Empathy Scale-Revised. Twenty-five health care students were randomized into two groups. The results indicated that both simulated...

Exploring the Perspectives of Parents of Individuals with Autism from Low-Resourced Communities to Inform Family Navigator Programs
In this study, we extend the extent literature by exploring the lived experiences of 12 parents of autistic children from low-resourced communities to inform the development of a family navigator program. Findings demonstrated that navigator programs need to prepare navigators to address barriers such as limited knowledge and difficulty accepting an autism diagnosis. Navigator programs should teach navigators to use strategies with families including educating families about services and connecting families with peer support. Program content should reflect direct services, government services, and advocacy strategies. Nota...

Alteration in maternal serum uric acid levels in pre-eclampsia and associated perinatal outcomes: a cross-sectional study in Ghana
CONCLUSION: hyperuricemia in pre-eclampsia was significantly associated with both maternal (caesarean section and severe hypertension) and neonatal (low birth weight) adverse outcomes. Hyperuricemia seems clinically useful in predicting pregnancy outcomes, especially in preterm pre-eclampsia. Further longitudinal study is recommended in exploring the clinical significance of maternal uric acid levels and pregnancy outcomes in pre-eclampsia.PMID:38681101 | PMC:PMC11055187 | DOI:10.11604/pamj.2024.47.49.37106 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

Assessment of average glandular dose in mammography practice of a teaching hospital in Ghana
CONCLUSION: average glandular dose (AGD) was consistent with other findings in literature studies. It was also observed that MEC yielded lower AGD per exposure values than AEC. There was no significant difference in the mean AGD per exposure for left and right breasts.PMID:38681097 | PMC:PMC11055186 | DOI:10.11604/pamj.2024.47.42.39243 (Source: Cancer Control)
