Measuring Small Bowel Length in Bariatric Surgery: An Ex Vivo Laparoscopic Training Experiment
CONCLUSIONS: With sufficient training, surgical residents' skills in measuring small bowel length improved when tested in an ex vivo model. Residents became more confident in their laparoscopic measurement skills. This ex vivo training model is a alternative and addition to on-site training.PMID:38626174 | DOI:10.1177/15533506241244854 (Source: Surgical Innovation)

Open educational resources for otorhinolaryngology : A  pilot study on needs assessment and implementation
CONCLUSION: This project yielded the first OER from a German ENT department, tailored to the German medical curriculum. One significant barrier to OER use in medicine, more than in other fields, is data protection. This challenge can be navigated by obtaining consent to publish patient data as OER. OER hold the promise to play a pivotal role in fostering cooperation and collaboration among educators, aiding educators in lesson preparation, and simultaneously enhancing didactic quality.PMID:38625372 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-024-01465-4 (Source: HNO)

Exotic Animal Practice in West Asia/Middle East
Middle East is a diverse and developing exotic animal market. Undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing professional development (CPD) education are noticeably absent except in few countries. Avian species are the most commonly kept due to traditional falconry or aviculture. Small mammal and reptile pet numbers are increasing. Endangered wildlife is still illegally kept and trafficked. Common diseases are similar to other continents related heavily with poor diet and husbandry due to uneducated, financially restrained, and prejudiced owners. There is a significant lack of board-certified specialists, teaching facilities,...

Few LGBTQ+ Science and Engineering Instructors Come Out to Students, Despite Potential Benefits
CBE Life Sci Educ. 2024 Jun;23(2):ar17. doi: 10.1187/cbe.23-10-0181.ABSTRACTLGBTQ+ undergraduates have higher attrition from science and engineering (S&E) than straight and cisgender undergraduates and perceive that having LGBTQ+ instructors would benefit them. However, it is unknown how many S&E instructors are LGBTQ+, the extent to which they disclose this information to students, and how disclosure affects all students, both LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+. In study I, we surveyed 108 LGBTQ+ S&E instructors across the U.S. to explore the extent to which they reveal their LGBTQ+ identities across professional contexts ...

The Nuremberg Racial Laws: The End of Jewish Medical Teaching in Germany. Who Were the Last Jewish Medical Professors in Berlin?
CONCLUSIONS: After the Nazi regime seized power, academic activities and medical research by Jewish professors declined but did not stop. However, these professors worked with only Jewish students on their theses. Most dissertations were approved and examined after the Jewish academics were dismissed by the university, in some cases even after they left Germany.PMID:38616664 (Source: The Israel Medical Association Journal)

Implementing spiritual care education into the teaching of palliative medicine: an outcome evaluation
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that implementing spiritual care education following an interprofessional approach into existing medical curricula, e.g. palliative medicine, is feasible and well perceived among medical students. Students do not wish for a seminar which solely revolves around spiritual care but prefer a close link to clinical practice and strategies.PMID:38622620 | DOI:10.1186/s12909-024-05415-0 (Source: Pain Physician)
