How healthy is the health budget of < em > Amrit Kaal < /em > : 2023-24?
J Family Med Prim Care. 2024 Jan;13(1):5-9. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_398_23. Epub 2024 Feb 8.ABSTRACTPolitical will is the key to public health policy-making and a major driving force for the attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in any nation. To achieve UHC, the Indian government laid down National Health Policy in 1983 and updated it in 2002 and recently in 2017. This recent policy emphasized increasing healthcare spending and economic growth. In the current budget, there is an increment in the share of GDP of 0.34% from the previous year's allocation, but still staggering for the envisaged 2.5% to achieve UHC. ...

Maximizing longevity: erythropoietin's impact on sickle cell anaemia survival rates
In conclusion, while the application of EPO in SCA treatment holds promise, additional research is indispensable to comprehend its precise role, optimize dosing strategies, and ensure safety, thereby paving the way for enhanced life expectancy and improved outcomes for individuals living with SCA.PMID:38463100 | PMC:PMC10923353 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001763 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Opioid Prescribing and Outcomes in Patients With Sickle Cell Disease Post-2016 CDC Guideline
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This retrospective cohort study showed that the 2016 CDC guideline may have had unintended negative outcomes on the patient population living with SCD.PMID:38466269 | DOI:10.1001/jamainternmed.2023.8538 (Source: Cancer Control)

Study of the antigenic characteristics of red blood cells units and their sickle cell disease recipients and the G6PD activity of transfused red blood cells units
CONCLUSION: The transfusion protocol is established to prevent immunological reactions due to disparities in blood group antigens between donors and SCD recipients. However, the units of African ancestry donors, which allowed the best compatibility, displayed a high rate of G6PD deficiency. The storage and recovery impact of this deficiency must be evaluated.PMID:38462030 | DOI:10.1016/j.tracli.2024.03.002 (Source: Transfusion Clinique et Biologique)

Splenic Subcapsular Hematoma from Commercial Air Travel: Case Report of a Unique Incident of Altitude-Associated Splenic Syndrome
We present a case of a 41-year-old man with a history of SCT who developed severe epigastric pain and nearly lost consciousness while traveling on a commercial airplane. His twin brother, who also has SCT, had a similar episode in the past and required a splenectomy. A splenic subcapsular hematoma was found in a computed tomography scan of the abdomen and pelvis with intravenous contrast. He was admitted and managed conservatively until his symptoms resolved. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: Though SCT is prevalent in our population, the complications that can arise, such as altitude-associated splenic ...
