Recently accepted to medical school.. how competitive is this specialty for DO?
Hi, looking for some advice. I am currently in the med school application cycle and have been accepted by a DO program. A large part of my interest in medicine is having several family members affected by cancer and my best friend's battle with sickle cell anemia. Through shadowing and research experience at a med school this is a specialty I could see myself in. I have a few more interviews, but if granted no more acceptances, will it be an uphill battle for a heme/onc fellowship? Thanks in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What is anesthesiology research? What research matters?
I am considering a research position doing bench work at my school for the summer. The project concerns the mechanism of opioids in resolving sickle cell pain crises using mice as a model organism. Is this research anesthesiology related? More generally, does research have to apply to the field one is aiming for to be impressive to PDs? Also, as I'm doing "bench work", does that mean I won't be involved in the final publication? If it isn't anesthesiology related, what are some good places... Malaria-resistant red blood cells for malaria patients?
Infectious disease docs, Do you recommend transfusion / exchange transfusion of malaria-resistant RBCs for Plasmodium falciparum malaria patients (especially now that parasites are becoming drug-resistant)? Some background for those unfamiliar with malaria: Type O RBCs (universal donor RBCs) are malaria-resistant along with sickle trait RBCs and many others. Evolution selected for type O RBCs and sickle cell trait RBCs due to a survival advantage with Pf malaria. These RBCs are found... Malaria-resistant red blood cells for malaria patients? Why would hospitalist think this is a good idea.. sickle cell pt
20 something year old HbSS, being hospitalized with acute sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis, Hgb sitting around 7. No exchange transfusion or blood transfusion. On hydroxyurea. Poor pain control for several days. Still 10/10 pain, hypertensive, tachycardic, on NC. Recent URI, has bacteremia being treated on IV antibiotics. Their plan was for several weeks of IV abx. But hospitalist also want to do a TEE to rule out endocarditis. - antibiotic plan would not change regardless of outcome of... How often have you caught patients in a lie perpetuated for years?
Recently saw a 50 something year old gentleman with supposed sickle cell disease who still had both native hips, no heart failure, no strokes, no CKD, or any other medical co-morbidities. I found all of that to be beyond abnormal given the low life expectancy and the typical disease burden of someone living that long with SCD. He is apparently a regular at our hospital presenting to the ER at least 5-6x/month and being admitted 1-2x/month and has been doing this for the last 3 years. He was... Southern Blotting Confusion
Researchers conducted an experiment by comparing DNA samples from 3 individuals: homozygote for the normal ß globin gene, homozygote for mutant sickle cell allele and heterozygote for a carrier. Each DNA sample is mixed with the same restriction enzyme, DdeI. Digestion leads to thousands of fragments. Gel electrophoresis is conducted forming a characteristic of bands and treated later with a stain. The gel is transferred and via capillary action the alkaline solution is pulled through the...
