"Resilience?" perspectives from adults living with sickle cell disease
CONCLUSION: This study suggests that current definitions of resilience used in validated survey measures do not match how adults living with SCD define resilience. Our results expand the understanding of resilience as a dynamic process, more about the process of "not giving up." These findings suggest that providers may find it productive to facilitate conversations with adults living with SCD around "how" they approach challenges. This study is also the first of its kind to examine resilience in a community living with SCD.PMID:38538428 | DOI:10.1016/j.jnma.2024.01.002 (Source: Journal of the National Medical Association)

Prevalence of Stroke in Individuals with Sickle Cell Disease Pre- and during Hydroxyurea Uses: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study in Tanzania
Adv Hematol. 2024 Mar 19;2024:7950925. doi: 10.1155/2024/7950925. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTSickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that leads to a variety of complications, including stroke. The use of hydroxyurea (HU) is reported to lessen the frequency and burden of stroke in SCD patients. However, less is known about the prevalence of stroke in SCD patients pre- and during the use of HU in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Therefore, the study assessed stroke prevalence before and during uses of hydroxyurea among SCD patients in Tanzania. A hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conduct...
