Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Neuro-Ophthalmology
Conclusions: OSA is associated with many diseases seen in neuro-ophthalmology clinics. More studies are required to assess the real ability of CPAP to reverse pathological changes. Ophthalmologists can screen for undiagnosed OSA in patients presenting with certain eye diseases.

ASSOCIATION OF RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION WITH CARDIOVASCULAR EVENTS AND MORTALITY: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Conclusion: This review suggests patients with RVO have an increased risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. More studies are needed to determine the highest risk periods for cardiovascular events and mortality after RVO and whether immediate cardiovascular evaluation and intervention will improve outcomes.

We appreciate the thoughtful comments Dr. Olsen and colleagues on our article “Central retinal artery occlusion – a new, provisional treatment approach”1. We agree that CRAO is a stroke and we emphasize this in our article because we believe it is still not well understood, nor its significance, by many ophthalmologists, emergency physicians, neurologists and generalist s. We also agree that there is no strong evidence based therapy for CRAO; however, despite the recommendation of no ophthalmic treatment by the Preferred Practice Pattern (PPP) covering CRAO5, ophthalmologists worldwide continue to perform various the...

New DIN and ISO norms for determination of visual acuity.
Abstract Recently, three international norms (ISO) for visual acuity assessment were revised. The DIN EN ISO 8596:2018 stipulates the Landolt C eye chart as the standard optotype and specifies display characteristics. An informative annex lists clinical optotypes for the first time. These include the ETDRS chart, Snellen chart and pediatric optotypes; however, these clinical optotypes do not have the same status as the Landolt C chart, since even with identical font size and stroke width they may differ in recognizability. The technical report ISO/TR 19498:2015 complements DIN EN ISO 8596. A scientifically ap...

Cholinergic nervous system and glaucoma: From basic science to clinical applications
Publication date: Available online 23 June 2019Source: Progress in Retinal and Eye ResearchAuthor(s): Muneeb A. Faiq, Gadi Wollstein, Joel S. Schuman, Kevin C. ChanAbstractThe cholinergic system has a crucial role to play in visual function. Although cholinergic drugs have been a focus of attention as glaucoma medications for reducing eye pressure, little is known about the potential modality for neuronal survival and/or enhancement in visual impairments. Citicoline, a naturally occurring compound and FDA approved dietary supplement, is a nootropic agent that is recently demonstrated to be effective in ameliorating ischemi...

We thank Dr. Tsai for his interest in our paper.1 Dr. Tsai and associates already published a study which showed that nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a risk factor for subsequent ischemic stroke but not for hemorrhagic stroke.2 They suggested that we should separate hemorrhagic stroke from ischemic stroke in the investigation of risk of stroke after NAION. We deeply appreciate Dr. Tsai and associates for pointing out that we should take another opportunity to further analyze our data and clarify the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke separately after NAION.

Perioperative considerations and anesthesia management in patients with obstructive sleep apnea undergoing ophthalmic surgery
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder characterized by breathing cessation caused by obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. It is associated with multiorgan comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, diabetes mellitus, and stroke. Patients with OSA have an increased prevalence of ophthalmic disorders such as cataract, glaucoma, central serous retinopathy (detachment of retina, macular hole), eyelid laxity, keratoconus, and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy; and some might require surgery.

Ocular manifestations in patients with cerebrovascular accidents in India: a cross-sectional observational study
ConclusionsOphthalmic manifestations were seen in 90% of stroke survivors. Their presence in majority of the patients in our cohort suggests that earliest routine ophthalmic examination should be mandatory in all patients with acute stroke.

Vestibular Migraine: How to Sort it Out and What to Do About it
Conclusions: The keys to correctly diagnosing VM is identifying a relationship between vestibular symptoms and migrainous features and being aware of the heterogeneity of manifestations of this enigmatic, but treatable, condition. The principles of treatment of VM include rescue therapy, lifestyle modification, nonpharmacologic migraine preventives, pharmacologic migraine prophylaxis, and treatment of comorbidities.

Risk of Stroke After Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy
We are interested to read the study led by Park and associates1 about the risk of stroke in patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). According to this retrospective cohort study, 1125 NAION patients were identified from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2013, based on the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) –National Sample Cohort (NSC) database. The occurrence of incident NAION was associated with an increased risk of subsequent stroke in model 1 (crude analysis; hazard ratio [HR] = 1.31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.89–1.92), model 2 (adjusted analysis for demographics; HR...
