[Traumatic optic pit-Optic nerve evulsion caused by indirect ocular trauma].
This article describes the case of a 28-year-old man who suffered an optic nerve evulsion (ONE) after falling from a height of 5 m. On admission visual acuity in the affected left eye was light perception, direct pupillary reaction was unresponsive, and the eye was hypotonic. Because of deep eyelid laceration, hyphemia and severe vitreous hemorrhage a globe rupture was suspected and a surgical exploration with vitrectomy was performed. This resulted in the detection of an ONE. During the following 24 months a painful eyeball due to secondary glaucoma developed and enucleation of the eye became ne...

[Recurrent DMEK failure].
We report a Patient with Fuchs dystrophy who underwent three Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasties (DMEK) caused by recurrent graft failure with raise in intraocular pressure and cystoid macular edema. At the third DMEK, herpes was detected in the anterior chamber tap and an adequate therapy was initiated. At the 6 months follow-up the cornea remained clear, visual acuity was 0.8, intraocular pressure was within normal range and macular edema regressed completely. Either a latent Herpes simplex Virus (HSV) infection of the patient was reactivated or an infected donor lamella was transplanted with donor-to-host-...

After differences in heart diseases between women and men were first identified and increasingly published in the field of cardiology since the 1980s, differences between the sexes have also become the focus of interest in other disciplines. [Back-calculation of the keratometer index-Which value would have been correct in cataract surgery?]
CONCLUSION: The keratometer index derived from back-calculation matched with the Zeiss index (1.332) but was much lower compared to other established indexes, e.g. the Javal index (1.3375). The missing trend for axial length or corneal radius implies that simple vergence formulas for intraocular lens refractive power calculation without correction terms or fudge factors perform best with a keratometer index slightly below 1.332, if the biometrically measured position of the intraocular lens is used as the effective lens position. [Partial retinal fenestration for optic disc pit maculopathy].
b F Abstract The frequent side effect of maculopathy in the optic disc pit seems to be based on a pathogenetically incompletely comprehended fluid exchange between the optic disc and the macula. A surgical procedure using vitrectomy with the creation of a barrier between the macula and the optic disc pit, for example using an endolaser or a scleral flap, is possible. In addition, the partial retinal fenestration as described here in detail represents an alternative surgical procedure resulting in liquid being conducted from the optic disc pit into the vitreous cavity. Complete absorption of the...

[Intraocular lens opacification after combined cataract and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)].
Abstract A visual deterioration due to opacification of the intraocular lens was observed 3 weeks after uncomplicated combined minimally invasive glaucoma and cataract surgery. Due to the patient's failure to apply the prescribed postoperative local anti-inflammatory eyedrops, homogeneous fibrin coating on the anterior surface of the lens occurred, as well as early scarring of the filtering bleb. There is no difference in ophthalmological treatment between SARS-CoV‑2 positive and other intensive care patients. Due to the small number of cases in our observational study, a specific ophthalmological clinical pattern related to SARS-CoV‑2 infections cannot currently be identified; however, the increased occurrence of subconjunctival hemor...

Abstract Coronaviruses are a genetically highly variable family of viruses that infect vertebrates and have succeeded in infecting humans many times by overcoming the species barrier. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which initially appeared in China at the end of 2019, exhibits a high infectivity and pathogenicity compared to other coronaviruses. As the viral coat and other viral components are recognized as being foreign by the immune system, this can lead to initial symptoms, which are induced by the very efficiently working immune defense system via the respiratory epithel...

Abstract The SARS-CoV‑2 causes a disease spectrum that includes asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic infections with subclinical manifestations but which can nevertheless still be potentially contagious. Ophthalmologe. 2020 Jun 18;: Authors: Bayyoud T, Iftner T, Bartz-Schmidt KU, Rohrbach JM, Ueffing M, Schindler M, Thaler S Abstract Preliminary investigations of human corneal tissues from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cadaveric donors indicated that no severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA is present.
