Use of artificial intelligence in screening for diabetic retinopathy at a  tertiary diabetes center
CONCLUSION: The present study shows the possibilities and limitations of AI-assisted DR screening. A major limitation is that sufficient images cannot be obtained in miosis in approximately 40% of patients. When sufficient images were available the IDx-DR and ophthalmological diagnosis matched in more than 50% of cases. Underestimation of severity by IDx-DR occurred only rarely. For integration into an ophthalmologist's practice, this system seems suitable. Without access to an ophthalmologist the high rate of insufficient images in miosis represents an important limitation.PMID:35080640 | DOI:10.1007/s00347-021-01556-5 (S...

Regression of idiopathic epiretinal membrane-Case report and consideration of the possible mechanism
Ophthalmologe. 2022 Jan 25. doi: 10.1007/s00347-022-01577-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the presence of a symptomatic epiretinal gliosis, pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peeling to remove the membrane is usually indicated in clinical practice. According to common clinical experience, almost no independent regression of such an epiretinal membrane and thus healing of the pathology alone exists. Therefore, the unusual case of bilateral independent regression of idiopathic epiretinal gliosis and formation of a lamellar macular hole in a 73-year-old male patient is described. Considerations of the possible mechanism ...

Clinical approach for periocular lymphoma
Ophthalmologe. 2022 Jan 20. doi: 10.1007/s00347-021-01568-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Lymphomas occur very frequently in the periocular region, predominantly in adulthood. This malignant tumor shows a heterogeneous clinical pattern.AIM: The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the symptoms, diagnostic procedures and treatment options for lymphomas of the periocular region.SYMPTOMS: The symptoms of periocular lymphomas are mostly nonspecific. The growth is usually painless and slowly progressive. A salmon-colored swelling is typical for conjunctival lymphoma.DIAGNOSTICS: The basis of a precise d...

Technical and optical aspects of smartphone-based fundus photography : Possibilities and limitations in practice
CONCLUSION: The development of adapters for smartphone-based fundus photography has resulted in interesting offers, which make fundus photography available to a wider user spectrum at low purchase costs. The offers on the market vary widely. It is therefore difficult to reach a definitive evaluation; however, smartphone-based adapters mostly have limitations with respect to user-friendliness, the size of the field of view and image quality.PMID:35043271 | DOI:10.1007/s00347-021-01559-2 (Source: Der Ophthalmologe)
