Detailed risks and characteristics of postepilepsy stroke in non-traumatic adult-onset epilepsy
CONCLUSION: Since the increased risk of stroke in epilepsy cohort peaked immediately after epilepsy diagnosis, early implementation of prevention strategies is considered.PMID:35484004 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2022.04.003

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 842: Increased Risk of Developing Depression in Disability after Stroke: A Korean Nationwide Study
This study demonstrated an increased risk of developing depression in stroke survivors compared to control subjects, and a higher risk of depression was associated with a more severe degree of disability. Clinicians should be aware of the risk of depression developing in stroke survivors, especially those with disabilities.

Management and 2-year follow-up of children aged 29days to 17years hospitalized for a first stroke in France (2009-2010).
CONCLUSION: This is the first study to report the epidemiology of childhood stroke in France. The validity of this study is supported by the fact that it demonstrated homogeneous descriptive indicators to those obtained by means of various methodologies in other populations. The high mortality, recurrence, and disability rates observed during the year following the initial stroke encourage continuation of the ongoing process of standardizing the management of childhood stroke in France. Using antidepressants and the risk of stroke recurrence: report from a national representative cohort study
Conclusions: We demonstrated that use of antidepressants was associated with an increased risk of stroke recurrence, especially in ischemic stroke among Taiwanese. Further studies are warranted to confirm the possible underlying mechanisms of these findings.

The Relationships Among Regionalization, Processes, and Outcomes for Stroke Care: A Nationwide Population-based Study
We examined the association of regionalization with processes and outcomes, and the mediating effect of processes of care on the association between regionalization and mortality for acute stroke in Taiwan. We analyzed all 229,568 admissions with acute ischemic stroke from January 2004 to September 2012 through Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Regionalized care for acute stroke has been implemented since July 2009 in Taiwan. Rates of thrombolytic therapy within 3 hours after onset of ischemic stroke, average numbers of processes of care, and 30-day mortality rates at monthly intervals for baseline...

Risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in stroke patients: A 5-year nationwide investigation of 44,460 patients
This study employed a nationwide population-based dataset to investigate the relationship between stroke and SSNHL. The Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database was used to compile data from 11,115 stroke patients and a comparison cohort of 33,345 matched nonstroke enrollees. Each patient was followed for 5 years to identify new-onset SSNHL. Stratified Cox proportional-hazard regression analysis was used to examine the association of stroke with subsequent SSNHL. Among the 44,460 patients, 66 patients (55,378 person-years) from the stroke cohort and 105 patients (166,586 person-years) from the comparison cohort were...

Increased Risk of Bullous Pemphigoid after First-Ever Stroke: A Population-Based Study.
CONCLUSIONS: The risk of BP is increased in first-ever stroke patients in a nationwide population-based cohort and this association is independent of well-known confounders of BP. PMID: 28467996 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Pregnancy increases stroke risk up to 1 year postpartum and reduces long-term risk
Conclusion: The risk of stroke was elevated during the first year postpartum, but lower in subsequent years. Stroke risk increased in multiparous ( ≥3) women. Physicians should be on alert for pregnancy complications and ensure appropriate management to prevent postpartum stroke.

Dynamic Changes of CHA2DS2-VASc Score and the Risk of Ischaemic Stroke in Asian Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
CONCLUSION:  In AF patients, stroke risk as assessed by the CHA2DS2-VASc score is dynamic and changes over time. Rates of ischaemic stroke increased when patients accumulated risk factors, and were re-classified into higher CHA2DS2-VASc score categories. Stroke risk assessment is needed at every patient contact, as accumulation of risk factors with increasing CHA2DS2-VASc score translates to greater stroke risks over time. Analysis of the Relationship between Adult Asthma and Stroke: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study Using the Korean National Sample Cohort.
Abstract Several previous studies demonstrated the risk of stroke in asthma patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke in asthma patients, independent of age, sex, income, region of residence, and past medical histories. The Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 through 2013 was used. Overall, 111,364 asthma patients ≥ 20 years old were matched to 111,364 control participants for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Asthma was classified using ICD-10 codes (J45 and J46) an...

Incidence and mortality of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with hyperthyroidism: A nationwide cohort study in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: Hyperthyroidism is associated with increased risk of MI and ischemic stroke, independent of cardiovascular risk factors. This association is prominent in subjects with age ≥50 years, in females and in non-obese group. Hyperthyroidism did not significantly affect the mortality of cardiovascular events.
