Decreased Risk of Stroke in People Using Red Yeast Rice Prescriptions (LipoCol Forte ®): a Total Population-Based Retrospective Cohort Study
This study showed a potentially positive effect of RYR on the risk of stroke. However, compliance with medication use should be cautioned. The findings of this study require future studies to validate the beneficial effects of RYR prescription on stroke risk.PMID:35502179 | PMC:PMC9056220 | DOI:10.1155/2022/8160425

Risk Factors for Postischemic Stroke Epilepsy in Young Adults: A Nationwide Population-Based Study in Taiwan
ConclusionsStroke severity, aphasia, malignancy, and drug abuse were associated increased risk of PSE and statin use may protect against PSE in young adults. Reducing the severity of stroke, statin use and controlling unhealthy behaviors might be able to decrease the development of PSE. Since PSE is associated with poor outcomes, early identification or intervention of PSE based on the risk factors might reduce the harmful effects of PSE.

Estimation and predictors of direct hospitalisation expenses and in-hospital mortality for patients who had a stroke in a low-middle income country: evidence from a nationwide cross-sectional study in Iranian hospitals
Conclusion Applying cost-effective stroke prevention strategies among the younger population (≤49 years old) is strongly recommended. Migration to universal health insurance can effectively reduce the inequality gap among all insured patients.

Newly Diagnosed Dementia and Increased Risk of Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Nationwide Population-based Study.
Conclusion: Individuals with dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease, are at greater risk of developing stroke, especially in intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage than patients without dementia. Early mental screening programs and health education should be initiated for dementia patients. PMID: 24484279 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Outcomes after surgery in patients with previous stroke
ConclusionPatients with previous stroke had a higher risk of adverse postoperative outcomes; their 30‐day in‐hospital mortality rate was nearly twice that of patients without previous stroke.

A Retrospective Cohort Study Comparing Stroke Recurrence Rate in Ischemic Stroke Patients With and Without Acupuncture Treatment
This study compared the risk of stroke recurrence between ischemic stroke cohorts with and without acupuncture treatment by calculating adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of acupuncture associated with stroke recurrence in the Cox proportional hazard model. The stroke recurrence rate per 1000 person-years decreased from 71.4 without to 69.9 with acupuncture treatment (P

IJERPH, Vol. 12, Pages 12618-12627: Lower Risk of Stroke after Deformity Surgery: Long Term Benefit Demonstrated by a National Cohort Study
Conclusions: In this national cohort of more than 13,000 ASD patients covering 10 years, stroke was approximately 25% less likely to happen in patients who underwent spinal fusion surgery than those who received medical management. Therefore, spinal fusion surgery may provide a protective effect against stroke in adult patients with spinal deformity.

Chinese Herbal Products For Ischemic Stroke.
This study is aimed to investigate the prescription patterns and combinations of CHPs for ischemic stroke in Taiwan. Prescriptions of CHPs for ischemic stroke were obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. Every prescription with a leading diagnosis of ischemic stroke made during 2000-2010 was analyzed. Descriptive statistics were applied to the pattern of co-prescriptions. Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess demographic and risk factors that are correlated with CHP use. The dataset of inpatient claims data contained information on 15,896 subjects who experienced i...

CHADS2 scores as a predictor of ischemic stroke after radical prostatectomy
This study assesses the predictive value of CHADS2 scores and CCIS for stroke among patients with prostate cancer. The study was conducted based on data taken from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). We identified a total of 5414 participants with nonatrial fibrillation (AF) prostate cancer diagnoses who underwent radical prostatectomy between 1997 and 2011. CHADS2 scores and CCIS were used to stratify the 5‐year ischemic stroke risk. All participants were followed from the date of enrollment until ischemic stroke, death, or the end of the 5‐year follow‐up period. The 5‐year risk of ischem...

Decreased risk of stroke in patients receiving traditional Chinese medicine for vertigo: A population-based cohort study
Conclusions Results of this population-based study support the effects of TCM on reducing stroke risk, and may provide a reference for stroke prevention strategies. The study results may also help to integrate TCM into clinical intervention programs that provide a favorable prognosis for vertigo patients. Graphical abstract

Return to Work after a Stroke in Working Age Persons; A Six-Year Follow Up
ConclusionsRTW after a stroke is incomplete, however RTW is possible over a longer period of time than previously thought. More severe disability at discharge from hospital and sick leave prior to the stroke were shown to be risk factors for no-RTW. This knowledge can contribute to more individualized vocational rehabilitation.

Antipsychotic medications and stroke in schizophrenia: A case-crossover study
ConclusionsUse of second-generation antipsychotic drugs appeared to be associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke in the patients studied, possibly mediated by high affinity for histamine-1 receptor blockade. Further research regarding the underlying biological mechanism and drug safety is suggested.

Risk of Stroke in Elderly Dialysis Patients.
Authors: Han SS, Ryu DR, Joo KW, Lim CS, Kim YL, Kang SW, Kim YS, Kim DK Abstract Despite the current knowledge about the risk of stroke and its related factors in general population, this issue in elderly patients receiving dialysis remains unresolved. Firstly, to compare the risk of stroke between hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD), data on 13,065 incident dialysis patients (aged ≥ 65 years; 10,675 in HD and 2,390 in PD) were retrieved from the Korean Health Insurance dataset. Secondly, to identify the risk factors of stroke amongst various clinical and laboratory parameters in HD, 980 elderly patie...
