Risk of stroke among patients with cerebral palsy: a population‐based cohort study
AimThe aim of the study was to investigate the risk of stroke in patients with cerebral palsy (CP), based on nationwide data in Taiwan. MethodThis prospective cohort study was comprised of patients recorded on the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 (LHID2005) who had a diagnosis of CP (n=1975) in records between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2007. A comparison group (1:5) drawn from the same database was matched for age and sex (n=9875). Each patient was tracked by data until the development of stroke or the end of 2008. Cox proportional‐hazards regression analysis was used to evaluate the hazard ratios ...

Neck dissection and stroke in patients with oral cavity cancer: A population‐based cohort study
ConclusionOur data demonstrate that neck dissection does not increase the risk of stroke in patients with oral cavity cancer. Patients have higher risk of stroke after cancer treatment because of their older age, specific comorbidities, and/or type of postoperative treatment. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2016

Elucidating the Association Between Depressive Symptoms, Coronary Heart Disease, and Stroke in Black and White Adults: The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study Epidemiology
Conclusions Proximal depressive symptoms were associated with incident fatal and nonfatal stroke and CVD death even after controlling for multiple explanatory factors, further supporting the urgent need for timely management of depressive symptoms.

Specificities of Ischemic Stroke Risk Factors in Arab-Speaking Countries
Background: Stroke is largely preventable, and therefore, a better understanding of risk factors is an essential step in reducing the population stroke rate and resulting disease burden in Arab countries.Summary: We performed 2 separate analyses in 2 similar populations of patients with noncardioembolic ischemic stroke. This first involved 3,635 patients in the Outcomes in Patients with TIA and Cerebrovascular disease (OPTIC) registry (followed for 2 years), with baseline collection of the usual risk factors and 5 socioeconomic variables (unemployment status, residence in rural area, living in fully serviced accommodation,...

Safety and Effectiveness of Intravenous Thrombolysis for Acute Ischemic Stroke Outside the Coverage of National Health Insurance in Taiwan.
Conclusion: In stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis according to the AHA/ASA guidelines, the outcomes were comparable between the reimbursement and non-reimbursement groups. PMID: 28752508 [PubMed - in process]

Rehabilitation Reduced Readmission and Mortality Risks in Patients With Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack: A Population-based Study
Conclusions: Rehabilitation use was associated with reduction of readmissions/mortality risks following stroke or TIA. The optimal intensity and duration of rehabilitation and the discrepancy shown in hemorrhagic stroke need further clarification.

Propensity Score Matched Analysis of Mechanical vs. Bioprosthetic Valve Replacement in Patients With Previous Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with previous stroke, bioprosthetic valves had a lower incidence of complications connected to major bleeding than did the mechanical valves. Survival and stroke recurrence rates, however, did not differ between the 2 groups. We recommend bioprosthetic valves for patients >60 years or who have a history of GI bleeding. IJERPH, Vol. 16, Pages 3472: Exploration of Medical Trajectories of Stroke Patients Based on Group-Based Trajectory Modeling
In this study, we used group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) to study the characteristics of various groups of patients hospitalized with ACVD. In this research, the patient data were derived from the 1 million sampled cases in the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. Cases who had been admitted to hospitals fewer than four times or more than eight times were excluded. Characteristics of the ACVD patients were collected, including age, mortality rate, medical expenditure, and length of hospital stay for each admission. We then performed GBTM to examine hospitalization patterns in patients who had...

Mildly Abnormal Lipid Levels, but Not High Lipid Variability, Are Associated with Increased Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Stroke in 'Statin-Naive' Young Population: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
Conclusions: Mildly abnormal baseline lipid levels were associated with an increased future risk of ASCVD events, particularly MI, whereas measures of lipid variability were not. Therefore, in young adults, achieving optimal lipid levels could be valuable in the prevention of ASCVD. PMID: 31978313 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 8679: Prior Antiplatelet Therapy and Stroke Risk in Critically Ill Patients Undergoing Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
an Choi We aimed to investigate whether prior exposure to antiplatelet therapy (anti-PLT) was associated with stroke incidence after the initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. We conducted a population-based cohort study based on health records obtained from the National Health Insurance Service database in South Korea. Adult patients (aged ≥ 18 years) who underwent ECMO therapy in the intensive care unit during 2009–2018 were enrolled. In total, 17,237 patients who underwent ECMO therapy were included; stroke occurred in 779 (4.5%) of 17,237 patients within 7 days of initiating the ECMO ...
