Elderly living near noisy roads have 'increased stroke risk'
ConclusionThis modelling study has examined the associations of exposure to traffic noise, independent of air pollution, on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, as well as on cardiovascular hospital admissions in adult and elderly populations. It has shown a link between increased noise from traffic pollution and risk of hospital admission for stroke and death. Possible reasons for deaths were most likely to be linked to heart or blood vessel disease, which could be due to increased blood pressure, sleep problems and stress from the noise. The limitations of this study are that the exposure model used is likely to overest...

Perioperative stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Perioperative stroke carries a significant clinical burden. The incidence of perioperative stroke may be higher than previously recognized, and there are diverse pathophysiologic mechanisms. There are many opportunities for further investigation of the pathophysiology, prevention, and management of perioperative stroke. PMID: 26391795 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

IJERPH, Vol. 13, Pages 636: The Relationship between C-Reactive Protein Level and Discharge Outcome in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke
In conclusion, the CRP level measured at admission was found to be an independent predictor of poor outcome at discharge. Recurrent acute ischemic stroke, non-lacunar stroke and DBIL were also significantly associated with discharge outcome in acute ischemic stroke.

Money is Brain: Financial Barriers and Consequences for Canadian Stroke Patients (P6.267)
Conclusions:Some stroke patients with financial barriers perceive challenges to accessing aspects of post-stroke care, comparable to those experienced by counterparts with heart disease. These patients may have inadequate knowledge of resources available to them and may not disclose concerns to their healthcare team. Therefore, providers themselves might consider asking stroke patients about financial barriers, to optimize their long-term post-stroke care.Study Supported by:This study was funded by Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions via a clinician fellowship to Dr. Campbell and through a team grant to the Interdis...

Impact of glucose-lowering therapies on risk of stroke in type 2 diabetes.
Abstract Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have an increased risk of stroke compared with people without diabetes. However, the effects of glucose-lowering drugs on risk of ischaemic stroke in T2D have been less extensively investigated than in coronary heart disease. Some evidence, including the UKPDS, has suggested a reduced risk of stroke with metformin, although the number of studies is limited. Inhibition of the KATP channels increases ischaemic brain lesions in animals. This is in agreement with a recent meta-analysis showing an increased risk of stroke with sulphonylureas vs. various comparators as both m...

Effect of prior stroke on long ‐term outcomes of percutaneous coronary interventions in Chinese patients: A large single‐center study
ConclusionsPrior stroke history was the only predictor of risk of post ‐PCI stroke. The noncerebrovascular adverse events were not increased after adjusted analyses of baseline characteristics and propensity analyses.

Analysis of echocardiographic parameters of cardiac function in patients with acute stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: One quarter of patients in the acute phase of stroke have LVSD and/or LVDD. LVSD adversely affects both neurological status in acute stroke as well as functional status in the short-term follow-up. Age at first-in-life stroke incidence and lower EF are predictors of poor functional status one month after a stroke. PMID: 30855702 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: Our MR study does not support a causal association of genetically predicted AD with ischemic stroke, large artery stroke, cardioembolic stroke, small vessel stroke, coronary heart disease, and myocardial infarction.

Electrocardiographic left atrial abnormalities and risk of incident stroke in hypertensive patients with electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy
Conclusion: Abnormal PTFV1, a marker of left atrial abnormality, was strongly associated with incident stroke in hypertensive patients, independent of in-treatment SBP and other predictors of incident stroke. This association, in the absence of detectable atrial fibrillation, suggests that an underlying atrial cardiopathy may cause left atrial thrombus formation and a subsequent stroke without intervening clinically recognized atrial fibrillation.

Stroke-Related Disease Comorbidity and Secondary Stroke Prevention Practices Among Young Stroke Survivors
Conclusions: Many young stroke survivors exhibit comorbid disease conditions that are similar to older stroke survivors. A large percentage are engaged in general chronic disease and secondary stroke prevention practices, yet less than two-thirds had seen a general doctor in the past 12 months. Primary care doctors and other health professionals are critical to the implementation of disease management strategies that consider their age, secondary stroke risk, expected life spans, and other issues that differ from older adult stroke survivors.

Relationship of Familial Hypercholesterolemia and High LDL Cholesterol to Ischemic Stroke: The Copenhagen General Population Study.
Conclusions -FH and high LDL cholesterol did not confer an increased risk of ischemic stroke. A positive association with ischemic stroke observed for some clinical FH criteria and high LDL cholesterol appears to be due by previous ischemic heart disease, rather than by high LDL cholesterol per se.
