Community-Based Case-Control Study of Childhood Stroke Risk Associated With Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— CHD is an important childhood stroke risk factor. Children who undergo CHD surgery remain at elevated risk outside the perioperative period and would benefit from optimized long-term stroke prevention strategies.

Assessing the Performance of the Framingham Stroke Risk Score in the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Cohort Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Although higher FSRS was associated with higher stroke risk, the FSRS overestimated the observed stroke rates in this study, particularly in certain subgroups. This may be because of temporal declines in stroke rates, secular trends in prevention treatments, or differences in populations studied. More accurate estimates of event rates are critical for planning research, including clinical trials, and targeting health-care efforts.

Nontraditional Serum Lipid Variables and Recurrent Stroke Risk Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Of various nontraditional lipid variables, elevated baseline triglycerides/HDL-C and total cholesterol/HDL-C ratios predict future vascular risk after a stroke, but only elevated triglycerides/HDL-C ratio is related to risk of recurrent stroke. Future studies should assess the role of triglycerides/HDL-C as a potential therapeutic target for global vascular risk reduction after stroke.

Contribution of Established Stroke Risk Factors to the Burden of Stroke in Young Adults Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Modifiable risk factors previously established in older populations also account for a large part of stroke in younger adults, with 4 risk factors explaining almost 80% of stroke risk.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00414583.

Neuroimaging Findings in Cryptogenic Stroke Patients With and Without Patent Foramen Ovale Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This is the largest study to report the radiological characteristics of patients with cryptogenic stroke and known PFO status. Strokes that were large, radiologically apparent, superficially located, or unassociated with prior radiological infarcts were more likely to be PFO-associated than were unapparent, smaller, or deep strokes, and those accompanied by chronic infarcts. There was no association between PFO and multiple acute strokes nor between specific echocardiographic PFO features with neuroimaging findings.

Plasma D-Dimer and Incident Ischemic Stroke and Coronary Heart Disease: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— A higher basal plasma d-dimer concentration in the general population is a risk marker for ischemic stroke, especially cardioembolic stroke.

Heme Iron Intake and Risk of Stroke: A Prospective Study of Men Original Contributions
Conclusions— Findings from this prospective study indicate that a high heme iron intake, particularly in normal weight individuals, may increase the risk of stroke.

Aortic Valve Calcification and Risk of Stroke Brief Report
Conclusions—Although AVC is a common finding in middle-aged and elderly community-dwelling people, our results suggest that AVC is not associated with an increased risk of stroke.

Social Network, Social Support, and Risk of Incident Stroke: Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In this sample of US community-dwelling men and women, having a small social network was associated with excess risk of incident stroke. As with other cardiovascular conditions, having a small social network may be associated with a modestly increased risk of incident stroke.

Association of Major Depressive Episodes With Stroke Risk in a Prospective Study of 0.5 Million Chinese Adults Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Findings from this large prospective study suggest that the presence of MDE is a risk factor for stroke, especially in smokers.

Sickle Cell Trait and Incident Ischemic Stroke in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— We observed an increased risk of ischemic stroke in blacks with SCT. Further investigation of the incidence and pathophysiology of stroke in patients with SCT is warranted.

Prospective Study of Anxiety and Incident Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Higher anxiety symptom levels were associated prospectively with increased risk for incident stroke independent of other risk factors, including depression. Anxiety is a modifiable experience that is highly prevalent among the general population. Its assessment and treatment may contribute to developing more effective preventive and intervention strategies for improving overall cardiovascular health.

Incident Stroke Is Associated With Common Carotid Artery Diameter and Not Common Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Although common carotid IMT is not associated with stroke, interadventitial diameter of the common carotid artery is independently associated with first-time incident ischemic stroke even after adjusting for IMT. Our hypothesis that this is in part attributable to the effects of exposure to blood pressure needs confirmation by other studies. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00063440.

Parvovirus B19 Infection in Children With Arterial Ischemic Stroke Brief Report
Conclusions—Using MassTag–polymerase chain reaction, we detected parvovirus B19—a virus known to infect erythrocytes and endothelial cells—in some cases of childhood arterial ischemic stroke. This approach can generate new, testable hypotheses about childhood stroke pathogenesis.
