Estimate of the prevalence of subjects with chronic diseases in a province of Northern Italy: a retrospective study based on administrative databases
Conclusions Despite the difficulty of having a unique definition of chronic disease, the prevalence obtained was coherent with the estimates reported by other national surveillance systems such as Passi and Passi d’Argento. Underestimates were observed when international comparisons were done; however, when we used less stringent definitions of chronic diseases, similar results were obtained.

The comparative effect of exercise interventions on balance in perimenopausal and early postmenopausal women: A systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomised, controlled trials
Menopause is associated with a range of physiological, psychological and social implications [1,2]. Changes in endocrine function have also been related to higher risks for cardiovascular disease, stroke and osteoporosis [3 –5]. Furthermore, an earlier age of menopause onset is related to greater frailty in later life [6].

Association between bisphosphonate use and stroke risk: a meta-analysis
ConclusionOur results suggest that bisphosphonate use is associated with a lower risk of stroke. However, the current evidence does not lead to a definite conclusion due to the borderline statistical significance and high between-study heterogeneity. Future studies, especially RCTs, are necessary to assess causality.

Quality of life and its associated factors among home-dwelling older people residing in the District of Colombo, Sri Lanka: a community-based cross-sectional study
Conclusion The overall QOL of home-dwelling elders of the Colombo District is moderate, with the lowest score being in social relationships and the highest in the environmental domain. Educational status, engaging in religious activities and financial independence are key factors associated with a better QOL. Limitations in physical activity and chronic diseases are associated with a reduced QOL. Living with the spouse is a key factor associated with the psychological health domain.

Transgender health and the impact of aging and menopause
Climacteric. 2023 Apr 3:1-7. doi: 10.1080/13697137.2023.2176217. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is used by many transgender people to reduce gender incongruence and improve psychological functioning. As GAHT shares many similarities with menopausal hormone therapy, clinicians supporting people through menopause are ideally placed to manage GAHT. This narrative review provides an overview of transgender health and discusses long-term effects of GAHT to consider when managing transgender individuals across the lifespan. Menopause is less relevant for transgender individuals who take GAH...

Screening for the primary prevention of fragility fractures among adults aged 40 years and older in primary care: systematic reviews of the effects and acceptability of screening and treatment, and the accuracy of risk prediction tools
ConclusionAn offer of 2-step screening with risk assessment and BMD measurement toselected postmenopausal females with low prevalence of prior fracture probably results in a small reduction in the risk of clinical fragility fracture and hip fracture compared to no screening. These findings were most applicable to the use of clinical FRAX for risk assessment and were not replicated in theoffer-to-screen population where the rate of response to mailed screening questionnaires was low. Limited direct evidence on harms of screening were available; using study data to provide estimates, there may be a moderate degree of overdia...

Mutations in ARHGEF15 cause autosomal dominant hereditary cerebral small vessel disease and osteoporotic fracture
AbstractCerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a prominent cause of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and a leading cause of vascular dementia, affecting small penetrating vessels of the brain. Despite current advances in genetic susceptibility studies, challenges remain in defining the causative genes and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Here, we reported that theARHGEF15 gene was a causal gene linked to autosomal dominant inherited CSVD. We identified one heterozygous nonsynonymous mutation of theARHGEF15 gene that cosegregated completely in two families with CSVD, and a heterozygous nonsynonymous mutation an...
