Combination of Dexmedetomidine and Ketamine for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Sedation
Conclusions: The efficacy of DEX–KET sedation was comparable to that of midazolam for MRI examination. DEX–KET was related to shorter scan time and lower occurrence of complications compared to midazolam.
Introduction
Neurocritically ill patients often require brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in addition to conventional neurological evaluations. Brain MRI can reveal structural lesions with a high sensitivity due to its excellent spatial resolution and enhanced soft tissue contrast (1–3). To acquire MRI images, patients' cooperation is imperative. However, keeping patients with ...

Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Is Associated With Circadian and Other Variability in Embolus Detection
Conclusions: Embolism associated with asymptomatic carotid stenosis shows circadian variation with highest rates 4–6 h before midday. This corresponds with peak circadian incidence of stroke and other vascular complications. These and ASED Study results show that monitoring frequency, duration, and time of day are important in ES detection.
Introduction
Transcranial Doppler (TCD) detected microembolism in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) may help stratify the risk of stroke and other arterial disease complications in persons with advanced (≥60%) asymptomatic carotid stenosis. If so, this t...

Prevalence and Predictors of Atrial Fibrillation and its Embolic Complications in Patients with Rheumatic Heart Disease at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Conclusions and recommendations: The study reveals a high prevalence of atrial fibrillation and cardioembolic events in Ethiopian patients with rheumatic heart disease. Hence, active screening of atrial fibrillation and optimal anticoagulation are recommended. [Ethiop. J. Health Dev. 2019;33(1):12-16]Key words: Rheumatic Heart Disease, Atrial Fibrillation, Cardioembolic Complications, Stroke, Ethiopia

YiQiFuMai Powder Injection Attenuates Coronary Artery Ligation-Induced Heart Failure Through Improving Mitochondrial Function via Regulating ROS Generation and CaMKII Signaling Pathways
This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Institutes of Health.” The protocol was approved by the “China Pharmaceutical University.”
Surgical Preparation
The mice were anesthetized with chloral hydrate (4% chloral hydrate, ip). The HF model was induced by CAL as previously reported (Gao et al., 2010). Successful ligation of the coronary artery was confirmed by the occurrence of ST-segment elevation in electrocardiogram. Sham operated mice were performed the same process except left CAL. After ligation, the h...

Cardiovascular Programming During and After Diabetic Pregnancy: Role of Placental Dysfunction and IUGR
This study demonstrated that the incidence of ischemic heart disease and death were three times higher among men with low birth weight compared to men with high birth weight (5). Epidemiological investigations of adults born at the time of the Dutch famine between 1944 and 1945 revealed an association between maternal starvation and a low infant birth weight with a high incidence of hypertension and coronary heart disease in these adults (23). Furthermore, Painter et al. reported the incidence of early onset coronary heart disease among persons conceived during the Dutch famine (24). In that regard, Barker's findin...

Characteristics and 12-month outcome of patients with atrial fibrillation at a tertiary hospital in Botswana.
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, hypertension, rheumatic heart disease and heart failure were the most prevalent co-morbidities. AF presented in young people and conferred high mortality rates in both valvular and non-valvular AF patients. Prevention and optimal management of AF and associated co-morbidities are of critical importance.

Not Just Acid Reflux: The Need to Think Worst First
Discussion
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.1 This year, 720,000 Americans will have a new coronary event—defined as first hospitalized myocardial infarction (MI) or coronary heart disease death—and around 335,000 will have a recurrent event. Approximately 35% of people who experience a coronary event in a given year and around 14% of patients who have an acute coronary syndrome will die from it.1 Roughly 60% of patients with an acute coronary syndrome are transported to the emergency department via ambulance.2–4.
Up to one-third of patients experiencing an MI may not complain of chest...

ECG Educational Standards for Prehospital Providers
Conclusion
As the role of evidence-based medicine becomes more prominent in the field of emergency medicine, a clear view of the current state of ECG education and platform from which to implement uniform standards becomes increasingly essential; especially as research expands into the prehospital setting.
Further research into EMS education may identify both strengths and weaknesses in basic ECG interpretation appropriate for first responders.
Implementing minimum ECG interpretation standards for EMS personnel nationwide is one potential option to ensure prehospital educational institutions stay responsive to current scie...

Relation of Platelet Parameters with Incident Cardiovascular Disease (The Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort Study)
This study aimed to investigate the above-mentioned prospective relations in the middle-aged and older Chinese populations based on the Dongfeng-Tongji (DFTJ) cohort. We included 31,751 participants who were free of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, cancer, or severely abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) at baseline.

Risk Factors Influencing Outcomes of Atrial Fibrillation in ALLHAT.
CONCLUSIONS: AF/AFL is a significant risk factor for stroke, HF, and mortality. Additional risk factors for these outcomes were generally similar for participants with and without baseline or incident AF/AFL.

Cuffless Blood Pressure Estimation Using Pulse Transit Time and Photoplethysmogram Intensity Ratio.
Authors: Gholamhosseini H, Baig M, Rastegar S, Lindén M
Abstract
High blood pressure (BP) is one of the common risk factors for heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and kidney disease. An accurate, continuous and cuffless BP monitoring technique could help clinicians improve the rate of prevention, detection, and treatment of hypertension and related diseases. Pulse transit time (PTT) has attracted interest as an index of BP changes for cuffless BP measurement techniques. Currently, PPT-based BP measurement approaches have improved and are able to relieve the discomfort associated with an inflated cuff...

Prevalence and prognostic impact of electrocardiographic abnormalities in outpatients with extracardiac artery disease
In conclusion, ECG abnormalities were common in these outpatients with ECAD. Major and any ECG abnormalities were independent predictors of CV events. Addition of easily accessible ECG information might be useful in risk stratification for such patients.

Plasma Metal Concentrations and Incident Coronary Heart Disease in Chinese Adults: The Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort
Conclusions:
Our study suggested that incident CHD was positively associated with plasma levels of titanium and arsenic, and inversely associated with selenium. Additional research is needed to confirm these findings in other populations. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1521

Cardiovascular Event Prediction by Machine Learning: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.
Conclusions: Machine learning in conjunction with deep phenotyping improve prediction accuracy in cardiovascular event prediction in an initially asymptomatic population. These methods may lead to greater insights regarding subclinical disease markers without apriori assumptions of causality.
