Individual Components of the Romhilt-Estes Left Ventricular Hypertrophy Score Differ in Their Prediction of Cardiovascular Events: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
Conclusions The R-E score is predictive of CVD outcomes. The six R-E score components differ in their associations with different CVD outcomes, indicating that they may be electrical biomarkers of different physiological events within the myocardium. Graphical abstract

Is tree loss associated with cardiovascular-disease risk in the Women's Health Initiative? A natural experiment.
Abstract Data from the Women's Health Initiative were used to quantify the relationship between the loss of trees to an invasive forest pest-the emerald ash borer-and cardiovascular disease. We estimated a semi-parametric Cox proportional hazards model of time to cardiovascular disease, adjusting for confounders. We defined the incidence of cardiovascular disease as acute myocardial infarction requiring overnight hospitalization, silent MI determined from serial electrocardiograms, ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, or death from coronary heart disease. Women living in a county infested with emerald ash borer had an ...

Heart rate and ischemic stroke: the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study
ConclusionIn REGARDS, high resting heart rates were associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke compared with low heart rates. Further research is needed to examine whether interventions aimed to reduce heart rate decrease stroke risk.

Adherence of doctors to a clinical guideline for hypertension in Bojanala district, North-West Province, South Africa.
CONCLUSION: Overall adherence of doctors to treatment guidelines for hypertension was found to be low (51.9%). Low adherence rates were related to age (older doctors) and less clinical experience, and differed with regard to various aspects of the guidelines. PMID: 26245596 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation and Relation to Echocardiographic Parameters in a Healthy Asymptomatic Rural Korean Population.
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of AF in a population-based sample of adults in a rural region of Korea. Between January 2005 and December 2009, 4,067 individuals (60.2 ± 11.2 yr old, M: F = 1,582:2,485) over 21 who were residents of the county of Yangpyeong, Korea, participated in the study. AF was assessed on a resting 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) in 4,053 of the participants. Blood tests and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) were also performed to investigate the relationship between left ventricular mass and AF in the study group. Fifty-four cases (32 men) were diagnosed as AF among the 4,053 subjec...

Could testing grip strength predict heart disease risk?
Conclusion These are interesting results from a range of very different countries, showing that people with low muscle strength may be at higher risk of dying prematurely than other people. Earlier studies in high-income countries had already suggested that this was the case, but this is the first study to show it holds true across countries from high to low incomes. The study also shows that Europeans, and men from high-income countries, on average, have higher grip strength than people from lower-income countries. Interestingly, women from middle-income regions, such as China and Latin America, had slightly higher muscl...

Heart rate and cardiovascular events: a nested case-control in isfahan cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: An elevated heart rate was associated with the occurrence of cardiovascular events. It can be considered as a predictor of cardiovascular disease independently of other risk factors in Iranian adults. PMID: 25204481 [PubMed - in process]

The Case Files: When a Spade is Not a Spade
Turrin, Danielle DO; Sattler, Steven DO; Amodeo, Dana DO A 25-year-old Hispanic man presented to the emergency department with a complaint of three days of left-sided precordial chest pain. He described the pain as a constant 6/10 with pressure-like discomfort radiating to his left arm and the left side of his neck. He also experienced nausea, but denied any provocative or palliative factors. He said he had not experienced anything similar to this before. He had no family history of heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, or sudden cardiac death. He admitted to a 1.5 pack-per-day smoking history and social alcohol use,...

A Brugada-like electrocardiogram pattern induced after radiofrequency catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation
Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of the left atrium (LA) targeting the initiating triggers inside the pulmonary vein (PV) to disconnect PVs has become a very promising and successful treatment in patients with symptomatic and drug refractory atrial fibrillation (AF) of no or minimal structural heart disease [1]. Known complications of RFCA have been defined and investigated, including pulmonary vein stenosis, aortic root and atrial perforation, stroke and pericardial effusion and so on [1,2].
