Risk Factors for Dementia in Patients with Incident Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Population-based Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Apart from age, hypertension, depression, and anxiety, which are universally recognized risk factors for dementia, clinically active RA and presence of CVD were associated with an elevated risk of dementia incidence among RA patients.PMID:35840149 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.220200

As the prevalence of obesity increases, rationing arthritis care is not the answer
Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30, is increasing worldwide. Between 1975 and 2016, the worldwide prevalence of obesity nearly tripled, with around 13% of the world ’s adult population currently classified as obese.(1) Obesity is associated with increased risk of several systemic conditions, including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. The associated cost of treating obesity for the USA is expected to increase to $555 billion per year by 2025.(2).

Rheumatoid arthritis and the risk of major cardiometabolic diseases: a Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: Genetically determined RA was associated with increased risks of T2D and CAD, suggesting that RA plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of T2D and CAD.PMID:35658786 | DOI:10.1080/03009742.2022.2070988

Genetic liability to rheumatoid arthritis in relation to coronary artery disease and stroke risk
ConclusionThis study found that genetic liability to RA was associated with increased risk of CAD and intracerebral hemorrhage and that the association for CAD might be mediated by CRP. The heightened cardiovascular risk should be actively monitored and managed in RA patients, and this may include damping systemic inflammation.

Tofacitinib and risk of cardiovascular outcomes: results from the Safety of TofAcitinib in Routine care patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (STAR-RA) study
Conclusions We did not find evidence for an increased risk of cardiovascular outcomes with tofacitinib in patients with RA treated in the real-world setting; however, tofacitinib was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular outcomes, although statistically non-significant, in patients with RA with cardiovascular risk factors. Trial registration number NCT04772248.

Cardiovascular disease detection using machine learning and carotid/femoral arterial imaging frameworks in rheumatoid arthritis patients
AbstractThe study proposes a novel machine learning (ML) paradigm for cardiovascular disease (CVD) detection in individuals at medium to high cardiovascular risk using data from a Greek cohort of 542 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, or diabetes mellitus, and/or arterial hypertension, using conventional or office-based, laboratory-based blood biomarkers and carotid/femoral ultrasound image-based phenotypes. Two kinds of data (CVD risk factors and presence of CVD —defined as stroke, or myocardial infarction, or coronary artery syndrome, or peripheral artery disease, or coronary heart disease) as ground truth, were co...

Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Have Better Outcomes Than Non-Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients When Hospitalized for Ischemic Stroke: Analysis of the National Inpatient Sample
Objectives The aims of this study were to compare the outcomes of patients primarily admitted for ischemic stroke with and without a secondary diagnosis of RA. Methods Data were abstracted from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2016 and 2017 database. The NIS was searched for hospitalizations for adult patients with ischemic stroke as principal diagnosis with and without RA as secondary diagnosis using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes. The primary outcome was inpatient mortality. Hospital length of stay (LOS), total hospital charges, odds of receiving tissue plasminogen activator, ...

Long-Term Steroids in RA Linked to Increased Cardiovascular Risk Long-Term Steroids in RA Linked to Increased Cardiovascular Risk
Given the range of other therapies now available, avoiding long-term use of glucocorticoids for rheumatoid arthritis can reduce excess risk of heart attack, stroke, or other poor cardiovascular outcomes.Medscape Medical News

Cardiovascular risk and mortality in rheumatoid arthritis compared with diabetes mellitus and the general population
Dear Editor, We read with great interest the work of L øgstrupet al. [1] studying cardiovascular risk and mortality in RA compared with diabetes mellitus (DM) and the general population. In their work, the authors longitudinally followed patients with RA and DM. They highlighted that RA is associated with an increased risk of heart failure, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke and coronary revascularization than is found in the general population, but without reaching the risk levels observed in DM patients. They pointed out that patients with incident RA have the same 10  year risk of MI compared with DM patients. Howeve...

Systemic inflammatory response index as an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a retrospective study based on propensity score matching
ConclusionSIRI was independently associated with the occurrence of ischemic stroke in patients with RA. Thus, RA patients with elevated SIRI should be closely monitored.Key points•RA patients with IS had fewer traditional risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes, while inflammatory indicators were significantly increased.•The SIRI have drawn attention in recent years as novel non-specific inflammatory markers. However, only a few studies have been conducted to investigate their value in RA.•This study completes the gaps in the research on the relationship between SIRI and the risk of IS occurrence in RA patients.
