Are ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and undifferentiated spondyloarthritis associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events? A prospective nationwide population-based cohort study
To investigate the risk of first-time acute coronary syndrome (ACS), stroke and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and undifferentiated spondyl...

Rheumatoid arthritis-specific cardiovascular risk scores are not superior to general risk scores: a validation analysis of patients from seven countries
Conclusion. The QRISK2, EULAR multiplier and ERS-RA algorithms did not predict CVD risk more accurately in patients with RA than CVD risk calculators developed for the general population.

Cardiovascular Safety of Tocilizumab versus Tumor Necrosis Factor Inhibitors in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis – a Multi‐database Cohort Study
Conclusion: This multi‐database population‐based cohort study found no evidence of an increased CV risk among RA patients who switched from a different biologic drug or tofacitinib to TCZ versus to a TNFi. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Herpes Zoster and the Risk of Stroke in Patients With Autoimmune Diseases
ConclusionIn patients with autoimmune diseases, incident HZ was associated with as much as a 2‐fold increased risk of stroke in the subsequent few months. These data underscore the urgency of developing strategies for reducing the risk of varicella‐zoster virus.

Association of Rheumatoid Factors With Subclinical and Clinical Atherosclerosis in African American Women: The Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
ConclusionRA‐related autoantibodies are associated with subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis in African American women from a community‐based non‐RA cohort, indicating autoimmune factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Stroke in Newly Diagnosed Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A General Population ‐Based Study
Conclusion: Patients with SLE have an increased risk of cardiovascular events, particularly during the first year after diagnosis. Increased vigilance in monitoring for these potentially fatal outcomes and their modifiable risk factors is recommended in this patient population. This article is protected by copyright. Is ankylosing spondylitis a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and how do these risks compare with those in rheumatoid arthritis?
Conclusions Prevalent patients with AS are at a 30%–50% increased risk of incident CV events. When compared with patients with RA, this level of increase was similar for stroke, but only half as high for ACS and thrombotic events.

Longitudinal transition trajectory of gouty arthritis and its comorbidities: a population-based study
AbstractThe aim of the study was to investigate the longitudinal transition trajectory of gout and its comorbidities in male patients with gout in different age groups. A total of 3973 male patients who received a new diagnosis of gouty arthritis were identified from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database and divided into two age cohorts (<50 and ≥50 years). Each patient was individually followed from 2000 to 2009 to identify associated comorbidities, namely hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney disease. Two outcome measurements of stroke and all...

Disease Activity and Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Death among Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis.
CONCLUSION: Patients with PsA had a small but significant increase in SMR for death due to diseases of the circulatory system compared with the general population. Among patients, death was associated with DAI, as well as axial involvement in combination with peripheral disease, indicating more aggressive disease phenotypes. PMID: 27909142 [PubMed - in process]

Disease Outcomes and Care Fragmentation among Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Conclusion: In this cross‐site cohort of SLE patients, care fragmentation is associated with increased risk of severe infection and comorbidities. These results suggest that improved health information exchange could positively impact outcomes for SLE patients. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Stroke in Patients With Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis (Wegener's): A Population ‐Based Study
ConclusionPatients with GPA have a significantly increased risk of MI and a non–statistically significant trend toward an increased risk of ischemic stroke. Monitoring for this complication and vigilance in modifying risk factors are particularly warranted in this patient population, especially early after the diagnosis of GPA.

Most patients who reach disease remission following anti-TNF therapy continue to report fatigue: results from the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Register for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Conclusion. Despite achieving clinical remission, many RA patients do not achieve complete remission of their fatigue. Therefore, despite being important in overall disease control, reductions in disease activity are not always sufficient to ameliorate fatigue, so other symptom-specific management approaches must be considered for those for whom fatigue does not resolve.

Risk-benefit profile of statin therapy 'may be more positive than expected'
This study showed that providing an effective low-cost statin therapy to 10,000 patients for five years would prevent major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes and coronary artery bypasses in 1,000 people with preexisting vascular disease, as well as 500 people who are at increased risk but have not yet had a vascular event. By contrast, only 50 to 100 cases of symptomatic adverse events would be expected over the same period, as well as 50 to 100 new cases of diabetes, five cases of myopathy and between five and ten haemorrhagic strokes. Should statins be more widely used? Currently, about six million peo...
