Mitochondrial encephalopathy with lactic-acidosis and stroke-like episodes syndrome presenting as progressive supranuclear palsy
Clinical manifestations of MELAS are broad and include stroke-like episodes, myopathy, cardiomyopathy, headaches, hearing impairment, dementia, epilepsy, lactic acidemia, cyclic vomiting, diabetes, and short stature. Most cases of MELAS present early in childhood, with only 1 –6% presenting after the age of 40 [1]. Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder which can be mimicked by a variety of conditions, such as CADASIL, cerebrovascular disease, and autoimmune encephalitis [2].

The real world of stroke incidence in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
We have read a paper with great interest written by Fumagalli and colleagues concerning “the incidence of stroke in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) among different heart rhythm” [1]. In this paper, the authors found that stroke rates in HCM patients no prior history of atrial fibrillation (AF), stroke rates were similar in those with de novo AF or stable sinus rate (SR). And they further observed that severe left atrium dilatation was a powerful risk factor, irrespective of AF. The results provided evidence for the anticoagulation strategies to prevent stroke in patients with HCM.

Mitochondrial aspartate/glutamate carrier AGC1 regulates cardiac function via Drp1-mediated mitochondrial fission in doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy
This study investigated the therapeutic effects of the overexpression of glyoxalase I (GLO1), a detoxifying enzyme of gly cotoxins, on acute hyperglycemia–aggravated ischemic brain injury.  In the present study, adeno-associated viral (AAV)-mediated GLO1 overexpression reduced infarct volume and edema level but did not improve neurofunctional recovery in the mice with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO).

Impact of comorbidities on health status measured using the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire in patients with HFrEF and HFpEF
ConclusionsCardiac and non-cardiac comorbidities are common in both HFrEF and HFpEF patients and most are associated with reductions in health status although the impact varied among comorbidities, by the number of comorbidities, and by HF phenotype. A causal relationship between irritability and cardiovascular diseases: a Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: Our findings support the first genetic evidence of the causality of genetically predicted irritability with the risk of developing into CVDs.
