Clinical Characteristics, Treatment and Long-Term Outcomes of Patients with Right-Sided Cardiac Thrombus
CONCLUSIONS: Right-sided cardiac thrombus is rare but may have potentially life-threatening complications such as PE and paradoxical stroke. Further research is needed to determine optimal therapeutic strategies in this poorly-studied population.PMID:35987512 | DOI:10.1016/j.hjc.2022.07.008

Atrial cardiomyopathy: from cell to bedside
AbstractAtrial cardiomyopathy refers to structural and electrical remodelling of the atria, which can lead to impaired mechanical function. While historical studies have implicated atrial fibrillation as the leading cause of cardioembolic stroke, atrial cardiomyopathy may be an important, underestimated contributor. To date, the relationship between atrial cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, and cardioembolic stroke remains obscure. This review summarizes the pathogenesis of atrial cardiomyopathy, with a special focus on neurohormonal and inflammatory mechanisms, as well as the role of adipose tissue, especially epicardia...

E-152 Neurointervention in the pediatric population: 18-years experience from a single center
ConclusionsAt out institution, multidisciplinary interaction allowed the treatment of a wide variety of cerebrovascular diseases in the pediatric population. Pediatric patients carry high complication risks due to frequent presence of systemic conditions, but joined experience from pediatric neurology, neurosurgery and neurointervention departments allow their treatment with optimal planning and results.Abstract E-152 Table 1Intracranial aneurysms Variable Value Age at diagnosis, mean (SD) or median (IQR) 16 (16–19) Male:Female 12:10 Associated conditions•Moya moya•Connective tissue disorder•Von Wille...

Effect of taurine administration on symptoms, severity, or clinical outcome of dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure in humans: a systematic review
Conclusions: A formal clinical trial is needed to address whether taurine supplementation is beneficial to the approximately 1/250 individuals with DCM in the population.PMID:35855073 | PMC:PMC9257265 | DOI:10.12688/wellcomeopenres.17505.3

Echocardiographic Measures of Left Atrial Function and Size and Incident Dementia
To the Editor A recent study described a significant association between left atrial function and an increased risk of subsequent dementia, independent of the presence of atrial fibrillation. These findings are similar to our 2009 study, which examined subclinical left atrial dysfunction and risk of stroke in patients with patent foramen ovale (PFO). We found that impairment of reservoir, conduit, and contractile strain and impairment of emptying, passive emptying, and active emptying fraction was present in patients with multiple ischemic events, PFO, and atrial septal aneurysm compared with healthy individuals. After PFO...

Arrhythmia-Induced Cardiomyopathy: Mechanisms and Risk Assessment to Guide Management and Follow-Up
AbstractPurpose of ReviewArrhythmia-induced cardiomyopathy (AIC) is a condition where left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction is caused by or worsened by atrial or ventricular arrhythmias. While recognition of AIC has grown over time, the identification of patients at risk for AIC remains an ongoing challenge. The purpose of this review is to explore mechanisms and types of AIC, discuss risk factors for the development of AIC, and features that predict clinical improvement.Recent FindingsPrompt recognition and treatment of the culprit arrhythmia can result in partial or complete recovery of LV function. In atrial fibril...

Blood ‐based biomarkers for the prediction of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy prognosis: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsSeveral blood-based biomarkers were identified as predictors of HCM outcomes. Additional studies are required to validate their prognostic utility within current risk stratification models.

Causes of ischemic stroke in young adults versus non-young adults: A multicenter hospital-based observational study
CONCLUSIONS: Certain embolic sources and uncommon causes may be etiologically important causes of ischemic stroke in young adults. However, the contribution of conventional vascular risk factors and lifestyle-related risk factors is not negligible with advancing age, even in young adults.PMID:35830430 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0268481

Clinical Features of Acute Coronary Syndrome in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease and Its Correlation with Tumour Necrosis Factor in Cardiology
Comput Math Methods Med. 2022 Jun 30;2022:3439768. doi: 10.1155/2022/3439768. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTTumour necrosis factor (TNF) levels are higher in patients who have experienced an acute ischemic stroke. Greater levels of TNF may not be linked to an increased risk of recurrent coronary events in the stable phase after myocardial ischemia (MI). Coronary atheroma is connected to endothelial and smooth muscle cells, as well as macrophages that emit the multifunctional cytokine tumour necrosis factor (TNF). Transplanted tumours become more vulnerable when TNF-α was first recognized to have a function in hemorrhagic necro...

NLRP3 Inflammasome Overactivation in Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
AbstractAneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is an uncommon and severe subtype of stroke leading to the loss of many years of productive life. We analyzed NLRP3 activity as well as key components of the inflammasome cascade in monocytes and plasma from 28 patients with aSAH and 14 normal controls using flow cytometry, western blot, ELISA, and qPCR technologies. Our data reveal that monocytes from patients with aSAH present an overactivation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, which results in the presence of high plasma levels of interleukin (IL)-1 β, IL-18, gasdermin D, and tissue factor. Although further research is needed,...

Ventricular Septal Myectomy Decreases Long-Term Risk for Atrial Fibrillation in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and is an important cause of morbidity and embolic stroke. The impact of outflow obstruction and the influence of surgical septal myectomy on the development of new-onset AF has not been well described. Consecutive patients with HCM without previous AF were followed for 5.0 ± 3.6 years for new-onset AF, including 717 with obstruction who did not undergo surgical myectomy (outflow gradients ≥30 mm Hg at rest or after provocation), 555 with nonobstructive HCM (outflow gradients
