GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Cardiovascular Outcome Trials: An Update.
Authors: Andrikou E, Tsioufis C, Andrikou I, Leotsinis I, Tousoulis D, Papanas N Abstract Nowadays, major cardiovascular (CV) outcome trials with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are available. These have proven their CV safety, in harmony with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommendation for antidiabetic drugs. The potential cardioprotective effect of incretin-based therapies is attributed to their multiple non-glycaemic actions in the CV system, including changes in insulin resistance, weight loss, reduction in blood pressure, improved lipid profile, as well as direct effects on t...

Right ventricular involvement in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: patterns and implications.
Authors: Keramida K, Lazaros G, Nihoyannopoulos P Abstract Although hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited cardiomyopathy worldwide, the criteria for its definition and most of the literature concern the left ventricle, confirming the theory that the right ventricle is the neglected one. Right ventricular (RV) involvement includes structural and functional changes with significant impact on clinical presentation and prognosis. The pattern of RV hypertrophy can be variable with possible dynamic obstruction. Histological findings suggest similar pathogenetic changes in both ventricles supporti...

The evolving field of non-pharmacological therapies to improve functional capacity in chronic heart failure.
Authors: Bonios MJ, Adamopoulos SN, Drakos SG Abstract Clinical investigations in chronic heart failure (HF) have been increasingly including endpoints related to functional and exercise capacity. Noninvasive ventilation support (NIVS) constitutes a therapeutic option that could improve several markers of cardiovascular performance and functional capacity along with improvements in HF symptoms such as dyspnea. NIVS with bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) is a therapeutic option that can be better tolerated by patients compared to continuous positive airway pressure (cPAP) and potentially improve heart failure...

We examined the effect of a patient-centered, physician-led motivational intervention following ACS on relevant secondary prevention aspects. METHODS: Design: The IDEAL-LDL is a single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial, conducted among patients hospitalized due to an ACS. Following discharge, all patients undergo a baseline assessment of lipid profile. Patients in the intervention group receive an in-person educational session and an informative leaflet, and also undergo two phone-based, motivational interviewing sessions at 1 and 6 months. Cardiovascular disease in Greece; the latest evidence on risk factors.
Authors: Michas G, Karvelas G, Trikas A Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a significant and ever-growing problem in Europe, accounting for nearly 45% of all deaths and leading to significant morbidity. Greece is one of the European Union member states that top the list of deaths due to ischemic heart disease and stroke, a fact that is mainly attributed to unfavorable changes in modifiable risk factors. The aim of this review is to examine the latest evidence on the most important CVD risk factors. According to studies conducted during the last two decades, the prevalence of arterial hypertension, hypercholes...

Smoking Cessation Strategies in Pregnancy: Current Concepts And Controversies.
We describe the findings of key published studies, review papers and expert statements to report the efficacy and safety of strategies for smoking cessation in pregnancy, including counseling and pharmacotherapy. Counseling appears to improve quit rates, but mainly when used in combination with pharmacological therapy. Pharmacotherapy is recommended for women who are heavy smokers and are unable to quit on their own. Nicotine replacement therapy is a reasonable first-line drug option. It is recommended that women who are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, should be informed of potential risks for the fetus before co...

Late-onset cardiomyopathy among survivors of childhood lymphoma treated with anthracyclines: a systematic review.
CONCLUSION: The rates of anthracycline-induced LOCM among survivors of childhood lymphoma are high and dependent on study design. Future studies should explore whether modifying risk factors and suggested supportive care could decrease its prevalence among childhood lymphoma survivors. Until then, lifelong follow-up of these patients aiming to determinate the earliest signs of cardiac dysfunction is the most important measure towards primordial prevention of LOCM. Lower admission blood pressure is an independent predictor of one-year mortality in elderly patients experiencing a first hospitalization because of acute heart failure.
Authors: Formiga F, Moreno-Gonzalez R, Chivite D, Yun S, Ariza A, Corbella X Abstract BACKGROUND: Systolic blood pressure (SPB) is an acknowledged prognostic factor in heart failure (HF) patients. Admission SBP should be a risk factor for one-year mortality even in elderly patients experiencing a first admission for HF, and this risk may persists in the oldest subset of patients. DESIGN: Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 1031 patients aged 70 or older admitted within a three-year period because of a first episode of acute heart failure (AHF). The cohort was divided according to admission SBP values in...
