Advanced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in the Catheterization Laboratory Consensus document of the Working Groups of 1) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Acute Cardiac Care and 2) Hemodynamic and Interventional Cardiology, Hellenic Cardiological Society.
Authors: Latsios G, Mpompotis G, Tsioufis K, Toutouzas K, Skalidis E, Synetos A, Avramidis D, Tousoulis D Abstract The incidence of Cardiac (Cardio-Pulmonary) Arrest (CA) in the Catheterization Laboratory is not common. However, not only does it happen occasionally but its frequency tends to increase due to the increase in the overall number and complexity of interventions performed by interventional cardiologists. Therefore, certified knowledge and application of the ALS (Advanced Life Support) protocols by trained Catheterization Laboratory staff is imperative in many countries, by local Hospital standards and al...

Myocardial strain may predict exercise tolerance in patients with reduced and mid-range ejection fraction.
CONCLUSIONS: Stress echocardiography may provide important information regarding the exercise tolerance in obese hypertensive patients with reduced ejection fraction, mainly through the evaluation of left ventricular strain. The obtained evidence may also have prognostic value, particularly in the early stages of the syndrome. PMID: 29203160 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Hellenic Journal of Cardiology)

Echocardiography and Cardiac Arrhythmias.
Authors: Papadopoulos CH, Oikonomidis D, Lazaris E, Nihoyiannopoulos P Abstract Cardiac arrhythmias refer to any abnormality or disturbance in the normal activation sequence of the myocardium and may be indicative of structural heart disease as well as the cause of significant cardiovascular complications and sudden cardiac death. The following review summarizes the current state-of-the-art knowledge on the role of echocardiography in the management of cardiac arrhythmias and focuses on atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias where echocardiography presents a particular diagnostic and prognostic interest. M...

Associations between asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), nitrite-dependent renal carbonic anhydrase activity and plasma testosterone levels in hypogonadal men.
CONCLUSIONS: Impaired testosterone synthesis in hypogonadal men favors inflammatory processes, elevates inducible NOS-mediated NO formation, and impairs CA-dependent nitrite reabsorption. Normalization of plasma testosterone reverses these processes. Pharmacological testosterone may combat atherosclerosis in hypogonadal hypogonadism. Multi-slice CT (MSCT) imaging in pre-trans catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) screening. How to perform and how to interpret.
Authors: Latsios G, Spyridopoulos TN, Toutouzas K, Synetos A, Trantalis G, Stathogiannis K, Penesopoulou V, Oikonomou G, Brountzos E, Tousoulis D Abstract Aortic valve stenosis (AS) is the commonest valvular heart disease among elderly. Trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has become an established and effective alternative therapeutical procedure for inoperable and high risk patients with symptomatic AS. The procedural success is greatly dependent on a thorough pre- TAVI imaging screening. This requires a comprehensive and multi-modality approach, in which multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) is the c...

Repeated transapical TAVI for the treatment of a degenerated bioprosthetic valve.
We present a case of a failing trancatheter aortic valve treated with a repeated transapical (TA) TAVI valve in valve (ViV) procedure. Important considerations that need to be addressed carefully, is the correct choice of the second valve size and the implantation height. All available imaging modalities such as CT, TOE and aortogram are important to assess the mechanism of the valve degeneration and for the planning of the ViV procedure, in order to have a successful result. Brain Natriuretic Peptide mediates the prognostic role of renal function towards 10-year cardiovascular mortality in patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome: the HHF study (2006-2016).
Authors: Chrysohoou C, Georgiopoulos G, Kosyfa H, Haritou IK, Kouvari M, Filippou A, Iosifidis S, Tsiamis E, Aggelopoulos P, Pitsavos C, Tousoulis D Abstract BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: Risk stratification in chronic heart failure (HF) remains a challenge. Renal function and B-natriuretic peptide (BNP) might confer predictive value towards long-term mortality in HF patients after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS: From May 2006 to March 2009, 1,000 consecutive patients who were hospitalized with ACS diagnosis were enrolled in the study. In 2016, the 10-year follow-up (2006-2016) was performed in 745 partic...
