Incident Cardiovascular Diseases Among Survivors of High-Risk Stage II-III Colorectal Cancer: A Cluster-Wide Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to adjuvant fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy was associated with an increased risk of CVD among survivors of high-risk stage II-III CRC. Cardiovascular risk monitoring of this group throughout cancer survivorship is advisable.PMID:36240841 | DOI:10.6004/jnccn.2022.7042

IL-1 β is not critical to chronic heart dysfunction in mice with Chagas disease
In conclusion, the absence of functional IL-1β/IL-1R signaling did not prevent or reverse the decrease of SV or the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias induced by chronic T. cruzi infection, implying this is not a critical mechanism in generating or maintaining CCC. Since similar cardiac abnormalities were previously credited to IL-1β signaling, ruling out this mechanism is important to discourage further attempts of IL-1β blockade as a therapeutical measure.

Platelets, Macrophages, and Thromboinflammation in Chagas Disease
J Inflamm Res. 2022 Oct 4;15:5689-5706. doi: 10.2147/JIR.S380896. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTChagas disease (CD) is a major health problem in the Americas and an emerging health problem in Europe and other nonendemic countries. Several studies have documented persistence of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, and oxidative and inflammatory stress are major pathogenic factor. Mural and cardiac thrombi, cardiac arrhythmias, and cardiomyopathy are major clinical features of CD. During T. cruzi infection, parasite-released factors induce endothelial dysfunction along with platelet (PLT) and immune-cell activation. PLTs hav...

Neuropathology of central nervous system involvement in TTR amyloidosis
AbstractHereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) is a systemic disease caused by the accumulation of misfolded transthyretin (TTR). It usually presents with an adult-onset progressive axonal peripheral neuropathy and cardiomyopathy. In the central nervous system (CNS), variant TTR is produced by the choroid plexus and accumulates in the leptomeninges. CNS symptoms have been increasingly recognized in this population, including transient focal neurological episodes and stroke, particularly in patients with the V30M mutation and longstanding disease. The prevalence, pathophysiology, and progression of CNS involvement rem...

Ischaemic events in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients with and without atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractHypertrophic cardiomyopathy predisposes to acute cerebrovascular events including ischaemic stroke, transient ischaemic attack and systemic thromboembolism. Atrial fibrillation confers even higher risk. We aim to report the incidence of these complications and to investigate the impact of atrial fibrillation on the ischaemic risk in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Embase/Ovid and Cochrane library from inception to 20th March 2021. We compared the incidence of ischaemic strokes, transient ischaemic attack, non-specified thromboembolism events and system...

Exercise oxygen pulse kinetics in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Conclusion None of the frequently used CPET parameters, either as absolute values or dynamic relationships, were associated with LVOTO. Differently, an abnormal temporal behaviour of O2-pulse during exercise, which is strongly related to inadequate SV increase, correlates with reduced functional capacity (peak and anaerobic threshold VO2 and workload) and increased VE/VCO2 slope, identifying more advanced disease irrespectively of LVOTO.

Characteristics and long ‐term survival of patients with left ventricular non‐compaction cardiomyopathy
ConclusionsOur study questions the criteria being used for the diagnosis of LVNC. Further evaluation of CMR variables and association of these findings with demographic variables and survival is mandatory.
