Prognostic value of echocardiographic and Doppler parameters in horses admitted for colic complicated by systemic inflammatory response syndrome
ConclusionsEchocardiography may provide prognostic information in colic horses with clinical evidence of SIRS. Especially, PEP/ET and E/Em could be useful markers of systolic and diastolic dysfunction, respectively, to detect horses with a high risk of death requiring more intensive cardiovascular monitoring as it has been reported in human patients with septic shock.

By default, cells are prone to apoptosis, a programmed cell death through the activation of the caspase cascade. An 8-year-old girl in septic shock due to necrotizing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia developed signs of end-organ damage, new right hemiplegia, and left gaze preference. Access to Care for Patients With Time-Sensitive Conditions in Pennsylvania
Conclusion: Reliably matching patient needs to ED resources in time-dependent illness is a critical component of a coordinated emergency care system. Population access to critical interventions for the time-dependent diseases discussed here is limited. A population-based planning approach and improved coordination of care could improve access to interventions for patients with time-sensitive conditions.

Use of hypothermia does not improve outcomes for adults with severe meningitis; may be harmful
In conclusion, our trial does not support the use of hypothermia in adults with severe meningitis. Moderate hypothermia did not improve outcome in patients with severe bacterial meningitis and may even be harmful. Our results may have important implications for future trials on hypothermia in patients presenting with septic shock or stroke. Careful evaluation of safety issues in these future and ongoing trials are needed," the authors write.
