Early Prediction of One-Year Mortality in Ischemic and Haemorrhagic Stroke
The worldwide stroke incidence is 17 million per year,1 and 12 % of all deaths worldwide are caused by stroke making it the third leading cause of death after cancer and ischemic heart disease.2

Long ‐term results after reconstruction of a new annulus in heavily calcified mitral annulus
ConclusionsThe reconstruction of the mitral annulus by using our technique in patients with severe calcification of the mitral annulus has low long ‐term mortality, good functional results, and a lack of prosthetic complications.

Efficacy of Aspirin in the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer in the Elderly: A Population-Based Cohort Study in Korea
ConclusionAspirin reduced the risks of MACCE and cancer without increasing the bleeding risk in elderly Koreans with hypertension, T2DM, or dyslipidemia. Moreover, the benefits of the long-term use of aspirin in reducing the risks of MACCE were demonstrated. However, the decision of using aspirin for primary prevention must be carefully made on an individual basis, while estimating the benefit –risk balance of aspirin.

Blood cadmium concentration and risk of subarachnoid haemorrhage.
CONCLUSIONS: Cadmium concentration was associated with increased risk of SAH but this association was largely explained by smoking. Whether cadmium in tobacco may contribute to the vascular pathology and increased risk of SAH in smokers should be further studied. PMID: 31654906 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cancer and Cerebrovascular Disease
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo review the latest information about the interactions between cancer and cerebrovascular disease.Recent FindingsAdditional data support the finding that both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke are important complications of cancer or its treatment. Reperfusion therapy is being given successfully to patients with stroke complicating cancer.SummaryHemorrhagic stroke may occur with metastatic disease to the brain, coagulopathies from cancer, in particular leukemia, or as complications of chemotherapy. Ischemic stroke also may be a complication of metastatic disease with local invasion of vessels, a pro...

Neutrophil ‐to‐lymphocyte ratio predicts hemorrhagic transformation in ischemic stroke: A meta‐analysis
ConclusionA high NLR can predict HT and 3 ‐month mortality in patients with AIS. Regardless of the country of origin and the sampling time, an NLR with a cutoff value of 7.5–11 was independently associated with HT in AIS patients.

Dabrafenib Plus Trametinib for BRAF V600E-Mutant Non-small Cell Lung Cancer: A Patient Case Report
We report the case of a 70-year-old Asian woman (never smoker) who was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma in May 2014. Testing at diagnosis was negative for programmed death ligand 1 orEGFR,ALK, andROS1 alterations. She was started on carboplatin-pemetrexed-bevacizumab and maintenance bevacizumab but progressed in September 2015. Subsequently, she progressed on second-line nivolumab and third-line docetaxel. In March 2016, pleural fluid obtained at diagnosis tested positive for theBRAF V600E mutation and she received dabrafenib plus trametinib. She experienced rapid tumor shrinkage and symptom improvement and became able t...

Intra-arterial thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke patients with active cancer
ConclusionsAlthough baseline characteristics and recanalisation rate after IAT up to 24  h after stroke onset were similar between acute ischaemic stroke patients with active cancer and without any cancer, stroke-related death and short-term outcome were significantly poorer in patients with active cancer than the controls. Post-procedural haemorrhage and active cancer itself were ind ependent predictors of a decrease in functional independence at 3 months.

Comparative effectiveness of rivaroxaban versus a vitamin K antagonist in patients with renal impairment treated for non-valvular atrial fibrillation in Germany — A retrospective cohort study
ConclusionThe prescription of rivaroxaban in patients with NVAF and renal impairment was associated with a lower incidence of ischaemic stroke and intracranial haemorrhage versus phenprocoumon in patients without evidence of cancer.

Selenium Drives a Transcriptional Adaptive Program to Block Ferroptosis and Treat Stroke
Publication date: Available online 2 May 2019Source: CellAuthor(s): Ishraq Alim, Joseph T. Caulfield, Yingxin Chen, Vivek Swarup, Daniel H. Karuppagounder, Rajiv R. RatanSummaryFerroptosis, a non-apoptotic form of programmed cell death, is triggered by oxidative stress in cancer, heat stress in plants, and hemorrhagic stroke. A homeostatic transcriptional response to ferroptotic stimuli is unknown. We show that neurons respond to ferroptotic stimul...

Predictors of mortality and disability in stroke-associated pneumonia
AbstractWhilst stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is common and associated with poor outcomes, less is known about the determinants of these adverse clinical outcomes in SAP. To identify the factors that influence mortality and morbidity in SAP. Data for patients with SAP (n = 854) were extracted from a regional Hospital Stroke Register in Norfolk, UK (2003–2015). SAP was defined as pneumonia occurring within 7 days of admission by the treating clinicians. Mutlivariable regression models were constructed to assess factors influencing survival and the level of di sability at discharge using modified Rankin Scale [mRS]...

Sex Differences in Sex Hormone Profiles and Prediction of Consciousness Recovery After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Conclusion: These findings indicate that TBI differentially affects the levels of sex-steroid hormones in men and women patients. Plasma levels of testosterone could be a good candidate blood marker to predict recovery from unconsciousness after sTBI for male patients. Introduction Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide and is increasing in incidence (1). Patients with acute severe TBI (sTBI) often develop severe disorders of consciousness, i.e., coma, minimally conscious state or vegetative state. Although many patients may regain consciousness during the 1-month post-TBI p...

The Outcome of Status Epilepticus and Long-Term Follow-Up
Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of regular care and patient follow-up. Introduction Status epilepticus (SE) is a condition and most extreme form of epilepsy (1), which leads to abnormal and prolonged seizure (at least 5 min). In case SE persists over 30 min, it may have severe long-term consequences (2). Referring to the new classification scheme of SE, there are two operational dimensions of the definition: time point 1 (T1) is associated with abnormally prolonged seizure, when therapy should be initiated, while time point 2 (T2) is related to the time of on-going seizure activity involving a risk...

Associations of Anemia With Outcomes in Patients With Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Anemia on admission was associated with higher mortality and an increased risk of poor outcome in patients with ICH. However, the results were limited by the high heterogeneity of included studies. Prospective, multi-center or population-based, large sample cohort studies are needed in the future. Introduction Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second most common cause of stroke and a highly lethal disease (1), which still lacks effective therapeutic interventions (2, 3). Although age, baseline ICH volume and neurological status on admission are well-known predictors of outcome of ICH (4), none of t...
