Assuring the Groundwork for Success: Mentorship, Sponsorship, and Allyship for Practicing Anesthesiologists
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):754-762. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006646. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe challenges facing the health care industry in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic world are numerous, jeopardizing wellness, and performance. Maintaining engagement and fulfillment of anesthesiologists in their work is now a critical issue in various practice settings: academic, private practice, and corporate medicine. In this article, we offer insights on how mentorship, sponsorship, and allyship are important in the advancement of the anesthesiology workforce including women and underrepresented mino...

Temporal assessment of disparities in California COVID-19 mortality by Industry: a population-based retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION-: Industries that consistently had disproportionate burden of the COVID-19 mortality may have benefitted from protections that consider workers' increased exposure and vulnerability to severe outcomes.PMID:37714416 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.09.003

Explaining the U.S. rural disadvantage in COVID-19 case and death rates during the Delta-Omicron surge: The role of politics, vaccinations, population health, and social determinants
We describe differences in COVID-19 case and mortality rates across the rural-urban continuum during Wave 4 of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a progressive modeling approach, we evaluate the relative contribution of a range of explanatory factors for the rural disadvantage we observe, including: pre-pandemic population health composition, vaccination rates, political partisanship, socioeconomic composition, access to broadband internet rate, and primary care physicians per capita. Results show that rural counties had higher observed burdens of cases and deaths in Wave 4 compared to more urban counties. The most remote rural ...

A synthetic delivery vector for mucosal vaccination
Biomaterials. 2023 Sep 5;302:122298. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2023.122298. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe success of mRNA-based vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the value of this new platform for vaccine development against infectious disease. However, the CD8+ T cell response remains modest with mRNA vaccines, and these do not induce mucosal immunity, which would be needed to prevent viral spread in the healthy population. To address this drawback, we developed a dendritic cell targeting mucosal vaccination vector, the homopentameric STxB. Here, we describe the highly efficient chemical synthesi...

The efficacy of Facebook's vaccine misinformation policies and architecture during the COVID-19 pandemic
Sci Adv. 2023 Sep 15;9(37):eadh2132. doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adh2132. Epub 2023 Sep 15.ABSTRACTOnline misinformation promotes distrust in science, undermines public health, and may drive civil unrest. During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, Facebook-the world's largest social media company-began to remove vaccine misinformation as a matter of policy. We evaluated the efficacy of these policies using a comparative interrupted time-series design. We found that Facebook removed some antivaccine content, but we did not observe decreases in overall engagement with antivaccine content. Provaccine content was also removed, and ...

Does energy-consuming right trading have double dividend effect on firm's economic performance and carbon emission?
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 16. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29864-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhether the market-based environmental regulation policy can achieve a win-win situation of economic growth and carbon emission reduction has always been an academic controversial topic. Taking the pilot policy of energy-consuming right trading (ECRT) of China in 2016 as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper uses the difference-in-differences (DID) method to investigate the policy impact of ECRT on the economic performance and carbon emissions of firms. An economy-environment composite index has been conducted for testi...

Advancements in Nipah virus treatment: Analysis of current progress in vaccines, antivirals, and therapeutics
Immunology. 2023 Sep 15. doi: 10.1111/imm.13695. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNipah virus (NiV) causes severe encephalitis in humans. Three NiV strains NiV-Malaysia (NiVM ), NiV Bangladesh (NiVB ), and NiV India (NiVI reported in 2019) have been circulating in South-Asian nations. Sporadic outbreak observed in South-East Asian countries but human to human transmission raises the concern about its pandemic potential. The presence of the viral genome in reservoir bats has further confirmed that NiV has spread to the African and Australian continents. NiV research activities have gained momentum to achieve specific preparedn...
